Developer and Fixer for Film AND Paper?

Hey all,
I have a bunch of chemicals for printing photos, but I've never actually developped the film myself and want to do some today.

I just read the bottles and the fixer (agfa agefix) says it can be used as a fixer for film at 1+7 for normal fixing, or 1+5 for rapid fixing.

What would the times be for fixing?

There's no mention on my developer (Agfa Multicontrast developer) about using it with film...

Has anyone tried it before?

the agfa developer is for paper.

the fixing times are going to be about 5 minutes, unless it is tmax film which takes a bit longer.

there is the classic fixer test , take a film leader and put it in the fixer and time how long it takes to clear and then double the time for film that has been exposed.

Vicky, great to see you!

Good luck with your first film development. You'll find how simple the process really is and wodner what took you so long to give it a try. If you like shooting a lot of B&W, you're going to save a ton of money doing it at home.

Have fun - and I hope to hear how it goes, if not actually see the results.

What film are you shooting? I think I still have my list of fix times/ratios from class. Every film is a little different. Usually 5+ minutes or so, you can't really over fix. I left prints in fix for about a hour... I forgot and went to lunch with some people form class, came back and they were fine.

leaving film and prints in fixer for extended periods of time, especially rapid fixer, will cause bleaching. 3-5 mins for RC plastic paper, 5-7 mins for fiber.

ya this luckily was a VERY used fixer haha I mean it was in the group darkroom for about 6 hours straight with 10+ people making at least 5 prints an hour haha you do the math, it was well used and I was surprised it still did the trick!

Just as in extended wash times, soaking a print in a liquid for long periods of time runs the risk of floating the emulsion off the paper as well. Less likely with RC but it will happen.

One of the reasons I decided to make a darkroom at home was because I couldn't bear working in community darkrooms.

One of my favorite papers ever was the old Agfa MCC 118, but it was somewhat prone to exactly what JC described. A wonderful emulsion for bromoil and hand coloring, but if I didn't hang over it during development, as well as washing, I could end up in trouble when I got to working with it.
