Thanks you two!
I was amazed and fascinated by the blue colour of the icebergs. It was especially 'cool' when the ship passed through a large field of them. It was like a Wonderland, with fantastic shapes floating past all around us.
It was a bit disconcerting at night though, in the pitch dark, knowing they were out there. They are picked up on the ship's radar, and one of the crew would man a huge spotlight to pick them out for the captain. If there were only a few it's no problem, but we did pass through a 'field' of them at night once and that was a bit tense.

That is just pure gorgeous! WOW!! Not too dark... not too light... I'd say it's about as 'just right' as they come!
Does make me want to put on a coat, though!

Beautiful, just beautiful. Great story, too! I've always thought of them as sheer white, too, but this image captures it in a way that seems more "real", if that makes sense.
Just a lovely composition of a cold, lonely part of the world not many of us see. Thanks for posting!
it is all that lovely cloud cover that gives those wonderful shades of blue

They look blue in the sunlight as well! (Some of them, not all of them). This isn't a good photo as I blew out some of the white parts, but you get the idea that there was lots of blue glinting in the sunshine

with very bright contrasty scenes like this last one, did you ever realise that white also gets blown out in your eyes? I have seen icy/snowy surfaces which were so bright that the naked eye could not differentiate any structure any more.
So why should a photograph show more than a subjective eye-impression of the scene? If some details are blown out, this is not always a bad thing.
It would be bad if you had lost the shadows in this one.
The image shows good tonal and dynamic range, and is certainly well exposed.

Oh wow, really? That's good to hear. I always thought it was a bad thing to blow out the whites. But as you say, even my eye would have seen the same thing. Thanks a lot for the kind words! They have really made my day.

Very good point Alex. I know I've struggled with similar feelings as anty before.
yes, they can be very white, but you will note in the second image, the shadows are much bluer.
in fact many people would rather have a cloudy day for these type of images to enhance the color. I have some , that the ice is tourquise.

Yeah this shot really is great. I keep coming back to it. If it where mine it would be my computer background image. Terri, I'm sure you know what that means to me.
