I am considering setting up an account somewhere to display my photos. I've never had any experience with this, except at the website of my camera club.

I am not even sure about what to look for in this sort of site. Can people purchase photos from you? Are you protected from someone taking your photos? Is there protection if your account is public rather than private?

I'd really appreciate your input on this! Thanks!! :)

jeanette,

i would find someone who has some website experience. It is easier in the long run and saves a lot of time and frustration.

there are a variety of ways to protect the photos. They can be locked down so only the admin person can copy, or using a flash viewing proccess . it will not allow copying.

also, usually the size for the web is so small that downloading and trying to copy is a mess.

there are a lot of folks who paste a watermark on the photo. usually in a large , spoil the image place. (you can tell i hate this type :) .)

Hi Jeanette,

I use www.clikpic.com UK based and very easy to use and navigate. Templates and you dont need html. You can size your images anything up to 800 pixels in width and you can also use their watermark if you want. If you set up a paypal account also you can sell direct from the website.

Hi Jeanette. I use Smugmug. It is very user friendly, and Im dumb as a post when it comes to internet language, and set up my site myself. There are online tutorials, and a forum that helps out. The people that run Smugmug are the best I have dealt with in responding to issues.

Here is their site.

If you want to see how I set up mine, just click >>Room57 (http://chiller.smugmug.com/galleries)

You could try ImageKind (http://www.imagekind.com) as an alternative, one of my flickr contacts uses it to sell her stuff and I've always rather liked the look of the place.

I use Zenfolio (www.zenfolio.com (http://www.zenfolio.com)) and I love it. You can't go wrong with SmugMug either. I know someone who uses imagekind and he's happy as a baby. Lots of great choices out there.

well , my experince varies, but then i am not a big fan of all these out of a box sites.

having a wide variety of options is something that might be worth researching.

I like my Smugmug ... it caters to pros, commercial and non-pro. They are very responsive to questions and the site is rarely down.

One of several stories of how Smugmug acts corporately:

Smugmug has it's own forum. I noticed a request for help designing a photo montage. As I read more postings, the story develops that the OP has never made a montage before and that the montage was for his youngest client, an 11 y/o who recently was killed in an auto accident. At that point Smugmug jumped in and personally ask a few members for designs and Smugmug employees also submitted a few designs of their own.

In the end, the montage was created, numerous images were printed poster sized and smaller and FedEx-ed from California to Georgia on time for the funeral ... and all was done on Smugmug's nickel ... the photog didn't have to pay a dime.

Jeanette,

Protecting images on your website will never be 100% safe...think of the print screen button on your keyboard and if someone really wants an 800px wide image for their use they're probably welcome to it.

Obviously you don't want to use Flickr or it would have been suggested? I've been contacted through Flickr more for images than from my own site for sale and I don't even advertise to sell them!
What I found recently was Pixelpost. It's a template driven service where you will need a little information on ftp uploading and HTML. Don't be too daunted by that - 6 months ago I hadn't a clue about either. Then somewhere like www.000webhost.com will provide a service that is free of charge and advertisement free that will suit most potential websites.

Hope this helps.

Alan.
