Today, in front of a few dozen retired teachers, I was supposed to give a power point presentation on desert plant and animal adaptations--What it takes for their survival in the desert.

The free lunch went well. We moved the group to a meeting room for the presentation. I didn't know I was supposed to provide the projector. After all, shouldn't retired school teachers have one as part of their organization? So a very nice lady that lived locally had her husband bring his down from the hospital where he uses on for his presentations as a trainer. We couldn't get it to work and the host thought the show was going to be a failure. I told him not to worry, that I had a plan 'B'.

So I got up and told stupid desert stories for half an hour. Some of the good stories that people laughed at last month in Palm Springs worked even better. Probably because all these retired teachers were from the same area that these -tales- occurred in. Maybe because I told them better. Anyway, I got them laughing so hard I was asked to tell an encore story, and I was asked to come back next year and tell some more. Also, a couple from the local art council asked where I'd been the last year, that my photography has been missed. He also asked me to speak there and at another social group he and his wife are members of.

Discovering I like to talk in front of groups- what a heck of a thing to find out at my age.

So what I need to do is buy a projector.

I'm glad it went well, Walter. It's not always about photography. I think the major challenge of aging is diminishing enthusiasm, and discovering something you like to do is a very good thing. :)

Sounds to me like you pulled the proverbial rabbit out of the hat. Or made lemonade from a lemon. Choose your own platitude.

How wonderful that these little talks are going so well and leading to other things. And it's turning out that you enjoy yourself while doing them. You can't be unhappy with that! :cheer:

Thanks FP. For me, it's like I've always been a kid in a candy store- spoiled. I'm glad I had to go guerrilla. I suspected I could do it without the photos, but it takes so long for me to put these presentations together I always felt obligated to show them.

I've been reading about how publishers work- the real ones. If I ever got there, or even if I did self-publish, talking about the book, doing presentations and readings will be required for promotion. Likewise I'm finding this out for photography. The more I get out and talk about my work, the more I can get it out there. I'm happy that I'm becoming comfortable with it. If I enjoy it, then it becomes more fun. How strange for an insular, reclusive loner like me.

I've been working to broaden my viewer base geographically over the last 2 years. I'm trying to build connections with publishers, authors, historic/museum and educational associations, and art galleries for about 100 miles in every direction, at least on the desert side of the mountains here. Speaking seems to be what binds me to the different regions--At least if I can act as if I know what I'm talking about. :)

I think I'm dazed. :) Now I'm really looking forward to the Pecha Kucha presentations.

I missed this the first time around. Sounds like the Pecha Kucha presentation was a success...?

Yep. I used one frame/slide for a map and 19 of my desert photos to show the Mojave Desert as a single entity rather than a region divided by local loyalties. About 50-60 people were there. I'm really getting into making presentations and public speaking.

Cool. I may make this presentation again later this week (although it looks doubtful). If not then, then after the first of the year. I started developing the concept after going to the remote, small, communities and talking with folks--There are certain similarities between distant local groups that I believe can be appealed to through the photos I've made through the region over the years.
