The family (minus son) will be flying into Chicago O'Hare on 9 June at 12:40hours. We're due to show up for a family do in Stillwater, MN by Saturday, 18 June at the very, very latest (best be there by Thursday, 16 June).
What is there to see on the way from Chicago to Minneapolis/St.Paul?
Can you recommend anything?
How is in the area and could meet up with us while we're on our way?
Do you reckon it is feasible to first go out all the way to Niagara Falls (one direction), to only after that head for the family do in Stillwater MN? (Husband's idea, I looked it up on the map and don't reckon it is the wisest of all ideas). Could people in the know tell me?
All this is IF you still talk to me, since I've not been around since January...!?!?! Oops.

I live in the wrong part of the country to provide any answer, LaFoto, but enjoy your trip. Mostly, I think, you'd be going through Wisconsin, which is a pretty area.

Chicago to Minneapolis is mostly just farm country. The only thing you might be able to swing by and see is the Harley Davidson factory in Wisconsin. Otherwise you will see a lot of farms and small towns. Lots of scenic quirky photos be had in those small towns. As for Niagara falls, that is at least one night on the road stop, to get too. If you have the time it would be great. but figure it will take you 3 days of driving time, and you would want to spend a day there. It would be more of a round trip but you could drive on the USA side one way and back on the Canada side. But in Minnesota there are a few things to see. Go to the north to Lake Itasca. That is where the head waters of the Mississippi is. You can also see the park (can't remember the town) for Paul Bunyon a mythical character here in the USA. Also Minneapolis has the USA's largest mall. It even has it's own amusement park in it. If you were to go south into Nebraska I could tell you lots of places top go to. I will be at my HS reunion the end of May, but in Utah by June. So I will miss you by 3 weeks.

I'm sure I'm going to dissuade my husband from his notion of first going to Niagara and only THEN off to Minneapolis! I looked it up and it is just too far to go and the trip to Minneapolis will be nothing but a strain. So it'd be Chicago (and surroundings), then way to cover, then Minneapolis/St. Paul and the family do in Stillwater. Lake Itasca is something to remember, that might be nice. Thanks for the idea.

Sadly, Niagara Falls is a looooong way from Chicago (860 km!) and not in the direction you want to go. Because I'd drive up to see you and show you around if you were to go there.

How nice of you to say so, and I know you would, but I've decided we won't do ourselves a favour (at all) in going in that direction first only to turn and go past Chicago again in the other...
No other ideas for where we might want to go on our way from Chicago to Minneapolis and what we might want to see? There really is nothing much there?

Corinna, Chicago itself is a wonderful American city to explore! It should be full of great restaurants, museums, not to mention one of THE oldest, most classic baseball stadiums left in the world - Wrigley Field! :sun: You could have fun just taking in a baseball game there.
Do you still have contact with Corry (from TPF)? The last I knew, she lived just outside of Chicago and loves to go in to town. She would probably be happy to join you all and could show you all the sights. There are many beautiful areas along Lake Shore Drive, north of town.
Chicago rocks!

Jeanette lives in Wisconsin. Part way between Chicago and Minneapolis. Send her an email through this site. I can't remember ID here, but I'm sure Terri knows it.
Make sure in Chicago you visit Navy Pier and the Shedd Aquarium and Planetarium. Chicago is a lovely city...
