For a long time I've been unhappy with what Photomatix did to the color of my images. I'd gotten to where I would routinely blend images manually rather than combine them in Photomatix.
Then I noticed something. I had the option for color working space in Photomatix set to Adobe RGB. I would always export the images to Lightroom, which was set to Pro Photo RGB.
I reset the Photomatix option to Pro Photo RGB. With the mismatch fixed, at once I started getting images with true colors. I've redone several images and I've been stunned by how they all look fine now. There's no "HDR look" at all.
Duh.
