I'm taking part in my first model shoot next month. It's a bit of a double hitter for me as the building we're using is being knocked down a week later and I should have the chance to explore it with the camera. There will be 12 of us in the three and a half hour session and fortunately at least two of them are friends (not sure who else has booked it yet). Thing is, my digital is a bridge camera so I won't be able to use it to trigger the studio flashes provided. I'll be taking my Minolta SRT and shooting some film and can probably use the flash (pointed backwards) to trigger the studio ones. Could be interesting.

Anyone got any tips or advice?

I can't advise on the model shoot itself, that's out of my arena!

But, since you have some time before the actual event, I would definitely use it to study the backgrounds, natural light at certain times of the day, etc. For no other reason that it wouldn't all be completely new to you the day of the shoot - and from the sounds of things, you won't be able to go back.

Good luck to ya! :) I hope you'll show us the results.

How many models are going to be present? 3.5 hours is not really a lot of time if you are fighting over one or two models in a place that has several opportunities.

If you cannot use the lights provided just focus on shooting ambient light. You can use other things to bounce or diffuse light. Light reflector, car sun shade, cardboard wrapped with tin foil all work as reflectors. A scrim or thin material bought from the craft store work to diffuse light. Strobes are nice to use but only if you know how to use them- plenty you can do without them.
