This is a very old picture of my mother in law, taken by her best friend at the time, Babs. :) Babs has kept the negative ever since that time, and remained a family friend for years.

Recently, through circumstances Babs mailed the original negative to us. It's Kodak Safety film, which is the nondescript title that passed for film for a very long time before the company started naming their films for consumer use.

It's not in the best of shape, a couple of pinholes and some degrading - but needless to say, I was thrilled to be able to make an enlargement from this 50+ year old negative, and hand color it again! (The B&W photo has been in our family album and at one point, Rolleimaniac made a copy negative of it so I could hand color it, years ago while I was learning.)

I did a more detailed job with the hand coloring this time around.

This was taken in Pensacola, Florida. We're guessing 1954.

I think it's wonderful, Terri. Not without weirdness, but wonderful.

That is cool.

Thank you!

Not without weirdness, but wonderful. Oddly, I know exactly what you mean. It kind of propelled me along.

The colors are slightly off on my monitor. This is an 11x14 print, too large for my flatbed. I used my new copystand to photograph it with tungsten film and scanned the slide, so I could send to my MIL. I'm kinda sucky with color correction.

Love it! Such a throwback to older times, on many levels

That is really well done Terri.

I was at my Mommas the other day, and she still has a suitcase of old negatives from the 50s and 60s. There are hundreds, if not thousands of these little suckers. I would love to see what is on them.

Thanks, Carl.

I'd view that suitcase as a treasure chest.

So many of our family photos are just that - family photos, precious mainly to those related. But every now and then there are those that really transcend the moment. Fenman has recently posted a few.

For those kinds of shots, it's really easy to get senitmental and want to bring them back to life. This shot was one of those for me! :sun:

This shot reminds me of those old magazine photos.

Dumb question...I was thinking of stealing some of Mommas ol negs, and my scanners manual said it can scan negs. Is that true? Or do you think they are talking about something else. I think it would be cool to get some of those ol things and see if I could play with them in digital.

There are no dumb questions here at the Beat. K? :big grin:

If your scanner manual says it can scan negs, then you can scan negs!! And you should! :cheer:

Did it come with negative holders? It may be that you have to pick those up separately, but that's no biggie. Just check on the negative sizes your Mom has at the house, 35mm, 120, etc.

And then you have this entire new (old) world to bring to life. It's hella fun. I hope you do it! This shot reminds me of those old magazine photos.

It did come with this cardboard thingy(how is that for a techy term). Some of the negs are very small...like aboot 2 x 3 inches. I am assuming all these old negs will be black and white, but it might be interesting to see if it can be done. :big grin:

Warning: you can find yourself getting infatuated with your family history, studying your people up close like this. ;) It's pretty cool.

I will see what I can scare up. Been busy with halloween projects right now, but Im hoping to grab a few this weekend.
My Momma was hooked on cameras back in the day, and still is. Just a point and shoot lady really. She has albums and albums of old stuff, and it is really cool to see. None of that worrying that the horizon is crooked, or typical forum stuff we all put up with. She just has some really cool old black and white photos. I just saw one of her Grandma. I cant believe how old it is, and how good of shape it is in. My Momma is 87, so you can imagine how old this photo is. The people were rugged and tough looking, but the lighting is perfect. Damn....Now I want to scan it and show you. :tapedshut:
