Well, I thought I would get one of these going. I was going to back up to a few weeks ago, but, I will just back up to last weekend. Had a mountain of editing to do.
My latest projects have been abandoned places. Something about capturing the past, before it vanishes for good has always fascinated me.
so...here we go.
This is the Ernestown railway station built in 1855, and sits abandoned on the side of the CN tracks. During its day, it was a major stop on the Beltline railway. I messed around with the tones and all, but Im never happy with them.
http://chiller.smugmug.com/photos/511240016_RmuPG-L.jpg
Even tho not the greatest shot, I found a hole round back that I was able to get my 6'1 frame in, and snap this shot of the old lockers.
http://chiller.smugmug.com/photos/511240087_85pGL-L.jpg
My next day, I found myself driving to the ghost town of Coopers Falls. This little hamlet was built in 1876, when logging was in its prime there. Eventually things change, and now there are only a handful of resident still left. This is the General Store, which eventually closed down in the 70s.
http://chiller.smugmug.com/photos/513159382_wq63q-L.jpg
The ol blacksmith shop sits across the road, and is still used by the great grandson of the original Cooper to store some old machinery. This ol gas pump sits at the side of the general store. There were two ...one for gas and one for kerosene. People were always warned not to switch their cans after they filled up. :biglaugh:

not a grea pic, as the house sits under the canopy of some over grown trees
http://chiller.smugmug.com/photos/513159407_qnH3M-L.jpg
With the windows broken, the curtains still blew in the wind.
http://chiller.smugmug.com/photos/513171065_YfAZW-L.jpg
Another open door allowed me a quick peek inside the blacksmiths shop.
http://chiller.smugmug.com/photos/513171096_gkg3p-L.jpg
I found some remenants of what might have been an old buggy, and then noticed this on the side of the house.

Will post round two later. There are way too many photos to include from this day. My next unique find will be posted later. :sexywink:

Thank you so much everyone. Appreciate your comments. Out of all last weeks abandonments I captured, there were 15 buildings in all, and I got into only 4.
This was probably the wierdest of them all... I called it....The House that Stephen built.
As I approached the house, I went directly to the front entrance.
Little bit of a fixerupper.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v708/Chiller5757/abandoned/IMG_3508xx.jpg
When I rounded the side looking for a place to get in...I found this dead person.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v708/Chiller5757/abandoned/IMG_3524xx.jpg
Yeah, it even made me jump. :biglaugh:
As I made my way around the house it got wierder. Stephen King novels everywhere.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v708/Chiller5757/abandoned/IMG_3517xx.jpg
I wondered if I could get my arse between those boards covering the door, but when I got near there, I could feel the coolness of the dark abyss that faced me....and this garlic on the door and a duct tape cross on the floor.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v708/Chiller5757/abandoned/IMG_3521xx.jpg
....behind me, on the lawn sat a missing familys camper
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v708/Chiller5757/abandoned/IMG_3507xx.jpg
I found my way through the weeds to the house across the road...another fixerupper
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v708/Chiller5757/abandoned/IMG_3504xx.jpg
but this one had an entrance. Once inside, my first room was the kitchen.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v708/Chiller5757/abandoned/IMG_3499xx.jpg
It was the constant tapping and scratching that made me wonder what was coming from the door beyond the kitchen. My eyes adjusted to the darkness, and I could feel the moist stench of a mouldy basement ahead of my decent down the stairs
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v708/Chiller5757/abandoned/IMG_3492xx.jpg
To the left lay an old oil tank, but to the right was the crypt and the shoe of a missing boy
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v708/Chiller5757/abandoned/IMG_3502xx.jpg

My brain is flooded with these impulses of video death. I see white but black, and hear no sounds but static. Once this void filled with so much hope now drained by waves of distruction. I cant scream, I cant feel anymore. Is knowledge really worth such torment?
http://chiller.smugmug.com/photos/513146111_woU7h-L.jpg
This was another of last weekends projects. I came up with this "darkside" idea awhile back. It is sort of a play on the obsession that people have with TV. Could this be the future....sucking the polution fed to us from our tv screens...through a hose and a personalized mask.
The hardest part with this shoot was breathing. Cause the hose was connected to the "filter" intake, there was no air in the mask. Found out the hard way with the first take. :biglaugh: Some takes took almost 45 seconds to pull off, all the time taking a deep breath and holding it throughout the shot.
I deliberably blew out the lights, to give it that apocolypic feel. The other shots seemed very bland with such a dim light. I have a few more ideas for this character, but that will be at a later date.

I think it was the back....seemed to have a gunshot wound to the upper shoulder blade area....and well...the rest is a self explaining mess.
This doll is about 4 feet long. I have no idea what that schtuff is on it, kinda like a mold or something from the winters melt.

This weekend was an event. I had a few projects I was working on, some planned, but I always like to keep a few couple of "me" hours. Friday I was summoned to do a delivery 3 and a bit hours north of the city, where not much exists, except beautiful landscapes. The drag? Not enough camera time, but these are a few snaps....
The landscape always amazes me, with the rocks and all.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v708/Chiller5757/The%2052%20week%20project/CRW_0946xx.jpg
I had hoped to spend more time here at Burkes Falls. This will definatly be another trip north, when Im not working.

Part two of my weekend journey included a trip downtown. Henrys was having a coupon day, so I managed to pick up a new battery and get out for a walk. I also had to drop in at our downtown office, and pick something up, which gave me some time to hit Chinatown.

This guy amazed me. After I dropped a few coins in his bucket, I sat and listened to him play. My intention was to grab the expressions of the people as they walked by, but I never really could see much, except the busy sidewalk of legs walking by. This little guy managed to sneak in and offer some $$$

The dreaded rain soaked horse show. What a mess. After being asked to come shoot the first horse show of the season, I dragged my arse out of bed, and drove off for my 8am meeting at the stables. No sooner had I arrived....fog, rain, wind, mist, mud, schmeng...you name it. I was constantly wiping my glass for mist. Here are a few.

I went to the gardens, and just as I arrived it got cloudy, and small droplets of sky tears began to fall on my head. It was then, I heard the rustling inside a garbage near by.

o.k....last part I promise. I ended up with 113 images from this weekend.
After a trip at the gardens, a trip on the streets, and a trip at Potfest, I started back to my car, only to notice a large crowd gathering around my it. Now I dont drive a fancy arsed hearse or anything, so I wanted to see what all the commotion was aboot. Cool....another protest. This was an Anti Canadian, Anti American protest about the deportation of illigal immigrants working here, that are being rounded up and being sent home. I have always held back at the protests...ya know..hang in the wings and shoot from there, but this time, I wanted to get right in their faces....may have been ..oh never mind. I have far too many to post here, so when Im done editing, I might just open a gallery and paste the link.

Well, my attempts to get out last weekend were squashed by rain, a sick pooch, and a sick Momma. I did manage to sneak in a few images from the gardens of my neighbors. They were wondering why I was crawling around in their yards and it wasnt halloween. :biglaugh::biglaugh:
"Good to the last drop."(I think I really want a macro lens) This was shot using my 18-55 with a Canon 250d magnifyer.

This was the shot I worked hardest to get. These orange tulips remind me of fire,so I wanted to get the image to look like the purple tulips were behind a wall of fire. :biglaugh::biglaugh: I might still have some of that schtuff in my brain from Potstock.:razz:

Man oh man, what wonderful shots! And so varied! Animals, people, flowers, landscape, street scenes, action shots, setup shots etc etc. Wow.
I love how in that first tulip shot of your most recent post, you can see the bricks in the water droplet. And so many good ones in the protest pics. And of course the cute raccoon. And that recreated Mickey Rourke shot is awesome. And and and....well, all of 'em!

Week 3, part 4 is full of wonderful shots!!! The fourth one down really strikes me.
I'm loving week 4....especially the first three flower shots, and most especially the third one! LOL! Wow!!
He he heeee....I can just picture you crawling in and around the neighbours yards....good thing "Mrs. Kravits" (sp?) isn't your neighbour!!! LOL!!! (Anyone out there remember "Bewitched"....the show, not the movie?!!!!)
I hope your pooch and your Mama are doing well now???
Edited to add......First and Third photo from week 4....Nominated!!!!! Great photos!

You won't regret it if you do. Mine eyes have been opened to a whole new world. I'm still on the back side of the learning curve, but enjoying every shot (and deleting every other one )
so I wanted to get the image to look like the purple tulips were behind a wall of fire.

So many fantastic pics in what you've posted in the last 24 hours! And so varied! (from darkside to landscape to wildlife etc etc)
From last night's landscape shots, I especially like the one of the bench (fantastic clouds!), and the one below it of the path at 'almost sunrise'. Gorgeous.
In the wildlife series, I'm always partial to shots of cheetah's and that first pic (where it's looking directly at you and sizing you up) is stunning. The shot of the joey folded up in his mom's pouch is hysterical! I like the sad look to the white handed gibbon. And the emu with the clover in its beak is a hoot too.
My fave of the darkside series is the bride. Whoa, must've been some honey moon! (Or one heck of a 'trash the dress' shoot!!)
As always, I look forward to your shots. And I'm pleased to read you got out shooting several times during your week off.

Nice to see you back posting again. :goodvibes:
In the first set I love the shot of the tree washed up on the shore. It is very nice. Your shots of the clouds came out great. I now have to go out and buy myself a ND filter for my camera.
Shots of the zoo are always nice. I love the cheetah with the "tear marks" on its face. To bad for the rain and the loss of your flash.
The ScareFest looked like it was a killer of a time.:biglaugh:
I love the prop with the head that lops off. That must have been pretty awesome to see. It is so realistic looking. (It is just a prop.) :biglaugh:

Arto....yeah...goosy handles himself pretty well. Has a bit of a limp on, but is much more friendly then the others. He even lets me pat his neck. :-)
Sorry for the delay. Got out to shoot the band again, with the most brutal lighting yet. Was impossible to shoot without flash. Then I backed up, and turned, and broke my flash on a speaker monitor. :biglaugh::biglaugh: Ooops. I used an old film canister over the onboard flash, and turned the comp down a bit, but this was the best I could muster and tried to go for that small club feel. Going to shoot again on Aug 7th, at a larger venue.

Well, where I wanted to go this weekend, I never really made it, and then had an unexpected guest ask for a small tour. :irked:
I really wanted to capture some of the garbage, since the city has been on a 5 week garbage strike. So... This is all I found so far.
Even the homeless sit across the street.

Thank you John and Kristin. Appreciate your comments.
With the garbage strike, I was actually surprised how clean the areas I thought would be a mess were. There are a small group of people (cant remember the names, maybe Anty knows) that are wanding the streets cleaning up. Some of the temp dump sites are a site to see. Soooooo many garbage bags, and the stench is crazy.
Well...a few more, and I will leave y'all alone for another week. :biglaugh:
This is a series I refer to as Heaven sent. The clouds were so beautiful, and 3dee-ish. I added a midnight sepia , with an opacity of 50% to create this effect.

Oooo, what a wonderfully eclectic mix of photos! And I especially checked your thread out to see if you shot a pic of the wonky walkway, as I knew you'd been there with your cousin (I'm gratified to see a very cool pic of it!).
The statue pics, with those clouds, are real jawdroppers. And the sight of the teddybear in the cem brings a lump to my throat. What a moving pic! I, ummmm, think I will skip whatever 'edible' that is, with all the flies on it (ewwwww! You know where else flies like to alight, right?) And the colours/compo of the dragonfly pic are spot on.

Thank you Jeanney. The guild is pretty fenced off, but the eastern most part, there are some gaps under the fence. I slid under for these shots, but did not poke around. There are too many things around from the demolition(wires, pipes, and rocks) Not worth the risk.
Looks like the garbage might be around for a while, so there will be more shooting. You should see the pile near my house at the temp drop off place. The sad thing, it is in the parking lot, where I go to get down to the lake. It is blocked off by protesters. :whip:

Out of the 200 images I took over the weekend, this was the one that has been haunting my mind. I wanted to capture this with as little as possible, but still be able to create as much emotion as I could. This man lay on the sidewalk, with just his arm with the hat extended. I decided not to take it with people walking by, as I have seen that image many times, but I wanted to capture the lonely ignored feeling instead. I noticed the hat was closed too.

Thank you so much again for all your comments, and kind words. Appreciate it.
John...sometimes it amazes me what I see on the streets, now that I have made it my mission to photograph more downtown life. The sad reality is that it exists. No matter what their stories are, they are there, and have less then what we have. At first I felt intimidated standing there with an expensive camera around my neck, and that was the hardest to get around. Now I seem to have grown in my confidence to shoot on the streets, or be in the faces of a rally or protest. :-)
This weekend I found myself out at the shores of Lake Erie, and was blown away by couple hundred custom cars. What is it with these shows, that they have to cram the cars in so close, us photo shooting people have such a hard time. A lot of close crops, and patience waiting for a break in the crowds.
Just a few of the 100 or so pics from the show.
When I saw this car, I had to take a moment. I used to have this Roadrunner, same colour and everything. O.k....it did not look quite as good.

Ventured up to Georgetown, for a trek around the old mill. I will try to find a blurb on this place, but what a fascinating place to wander in. The machines are long gone, and there is not much left , except a crumbling building.
A view from the road.

Wow! (This coming from someone who couldn't care any less about car photography.)
Chiller, when you visit old abandoned buildings like the one here, do you use a tripod or mostly shoot handheld? (I assume the light-painting photos were made using a tripod, but you could've easily set your camera on a flat surface or sumthin'.)
Chiller

Thanks so much.:-) I try to travel light in the abandoned buildings, but most a tripod is needed. The last thing I want is to have to run through a fence hole with a lot of gear. When I can shoot handheld, I do, but it is a mix of 50/50 really.
I have shot in some places where I did not have my tripod, and used my camera bag and just rested the cam on top. :biglaugh:

Looks like you were well able to work around the tight spaces and crowds at the auto show. Great images of some exceptional autos.
If it weren't for your first photo, showing the mill in its surroundings, one would never suspect from the other images that it was such a rural setting rather than urban.
Wonderful shots!

The rails are some sort of thing that looks to have carried wagons or something. This used to be a paper mill, and on the other side of the arches were big drums. I have been trying to find out more about this place.

The car show was fun, and it is nice to take a trip back to when cars had personalities, not DVD players. :biglaugh::biglaugh:
The mill is located north of a residential area, and there seems to be some plans to make this a condo community center. The sad part is that is sits right on the side of a nice river, so Im thinking the urban sprawl will kill more nature. I think it would be nice to make it a greenspace, and keep a lot of the existing building as a monument.

With all the beautiful crappy weather we have been getting, I was trapped inside for a while, and bored out of my mind. :biglaugh: So...I did this.
It is a play on the see no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil. I just wanted to make it a little more mysterious....I think. I set up a black cloth, put on my finest long black t-shirt, and a blacked out face mask. Then I used one light, the mask and gloves...took 3 images and merged together.

I really love the b/w shot in the club! The way the light is streaming down from the upper right corner, illuminating the mike and back lighting the guitarist, is very cool! And I think the 2 shots of the singer from Adams God are pretty good, given the lighting and the fact he never stopped moving. The spotlight on the singer from Broken Son is nice too.
You've gotta get some tighter fitting gloves for those b/w hand shots. I love the concept though. And the painting with light is fascinating. I saw you do that with the Irish statues once too.

You could fabricate snoots and grids for some form of continuous lighting while getting your strobe kit back in working order?

Some of ya that live around these parts experienced it, others might have heard aboot it. We had some pretty nasty weather with 4 tornados touching down around the outside of the city. Even tho, I did not get out during the storm, as soon as it finished I bolted the crypt. I was in such a hurry to get out, I forgot the tripod in the driveway. :biglaugh::biglaugh:
When I got to my destination, it was pretty amazing to see...if I looked to the west I saw this. The colours were crazy. The orange sky from the west reflected on the storm as it passed towards the east. I have never seen skys with colours like this. oh...I had my iso at 800 by....um...accident. :biglaugh::biglaugh:

Well, I got to see one of the finished props that we did the video at the fort. This is the door, that has an HD video screen that shows this video, just before this door opens. Down the hall will be an actor playing this role I did for the video. I would have done it myself but the drive is 3 hours away. :irked: Sorry about the quality, I recorded the prop with my cell phone, but should be getting my won HD version soon.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v708/Chiller5757/Movie/th_MOV00007.jpg (http://smg.photobucket.com/albums/v708/Chiller5757/Movie/?action=view¤t=MOV00007.flv]http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v708/Chiller5757/Movie/th_MOV00007.jpg)[/URL]
The door is made from a wood and metal frame, with a video monitor installed in the middle to represent a window. The "skin" on the door is made from spandex soaked in latex, with "charges" on the inside, so when I hit the door with the axe, the outside would have small dents that appear. After the video is finish, the prop resets, and the door opens. The guest then walks down that hall, with all the same lighting.
BTW...turn it up...so you can hear me take off a chicks head...:batterup:

Wow, they are all so gorgeous. The Badlands looks like an incredible place to visit. The change of the folliage color adds to the beauty.
The sunrise is spectacular and the flowers are all beautiful. Magnificent.:D

On the weekend I was asked to come out and shoot stills for an upcoming video of the fort haunt. Back in May we shot the vid for the prop, and whatever promotions it was to be used for, and I acted the part of an axe murdering soldier.
I was finished my shooting by 8, so I asked for my costume, they had put away for me, and off I went in to scare the pee out of anyone who came near. Working this haunt was different then the place I worked last year. I have full run of anywhere I wished to take my character. So now, I will be working this place till after halloween on the weekends.
Im still editing the 200 pics I took, but thought I would throw up a few so y'all could see a bit.
The museum is converted to look like it did back in the day, with...well...dead people.

This year, Im the very first scare you have to pass. It is a mix of long hallways, and tunnels. I have a few different secret passages I can go in and out of , and I can appear 3 or 4 times in front of the same guests, and they dont know where I come from. The fort was designed during the war of 1812, and rebuilt in 1830something. It was made to confuse the american soldiers if they ever attacked, with its maze of tunnels, and chambers. This fort was attacked once, but never entered. Over the last few years they have converted it into one of the largest haunted attractions in Canada. Last year it was voted number one.

This place looks pretty awesome. What a fun way to spend Halloween night. Great costume you have there. Interesting history on the fort. Love the shot of the tunnel.
The louder you scream, the harder you die. I would definitely die hard.

A few images I took while over for a visit. I know they suck as far as so called professionalism, but I have never shot something like this. In time, I might get the hang of it. Yeah....the horizon is probably crooked, the lighting is natural, cause I dont have those fancy arse over priced umbrellys, and blah blah blah.:razz::razz:

Thanks so much. Appreciate all your comments.
Terri...that fort is a gem. On the 7th, we are staying over in the haunted officers quarters. At midnight, they shut out the lights on the fort, and we can roam in the dark. We did that a few weeks back, and those tunnels are some creepy. I wish I knew how to get my video to the computer, cause I got some crazy images.
Anyways. Last Saturday, the dead rose in Toronto, and I wanted to catch the feeding. The 7th annual Zombie walk took place, and this is the first time I have had the chance to shoot it. What a blast. Definatly going back next year.
Some of these images might be a little graphic for some...so that is your fair warning. whahahah

I finally got around to shoot Momma and son. Im trying to keep all the images basically the same idea. Wow! Where to begin with such a wide range of amazing shots. Love the b/w of your daughter and grandson (shots to be cherished...I love the Tigger on the bum of the onesie.)
The zombie walk shots are jaw droppers...are these people all theatrical makeup wizards??! How great that they like to pose for pics too!
The Terror Time shots rock...very very creepy and scary (especially those sawed fingers...*shiver*). I've seen you when you did Leatherface at Halloween, and even though I knew it was you, it was very very scary how you got in character. So I can imagine how the bloodstained you, with a bucket of body parts, would scare the bejeebus out of viewers.
LOVE the scenery shots...all those crimson red leaves by the gravemarker (and the angle at which you took it) make for a memorable image. And I love the Flamborough series. How great you've been out shooting a fair amount lately!

Every year, the company I work for, does a calender they hand out to the customers. We started it 5 years ago, and only printed off about 100 at the time. Now, this year is expected to print 400. I have 24 images that I poll the office staff with, and they pick the 12 faves, for this years calander. So this is it, in monthy order. (the frames are not on the calender) ;D
