I discovered recently that my Canon 500mm 1.4 lens was not functioning properly, it would neither do auto or manual focus on either of my cameras. It's not worth having it looked at for the money repair places charge, so I looked at a Sigma 50mm 1.4 EX DG HSM. I was immediately impressed with the build quality, very solid indeed.....and the best part it's on special for AU $600. I am picking it up tomorrow as I was on my bike today. I've seen images taken with this and they look great, anyone here have experience with one? In the past I've always stuck with Canon lenses, there's always room for change.

I have no relevant experience but if you get one, let us know what you think. I have one lens that isn't from Canon (a Tamron) and I like it very much.

I''ve heard excellent things about that lens, but haven't used it myself. I look forward to seeing your pix :)
For what it's worth, I have 3 Sigma lenses and 2 Sigma Teleconverters and love them all.
I've heard good stuff about it. I always or nearly always use Nikon lenses, but the odd Sigma has impressed me. Eg: 12-24mm is way better then the 10-20mm Sigma, quality is amazing, but the 50mm f1.4 was something I was eyeing up also... so looking forward to seeing some shots.

The Canon 50mm f/1.4 is notorious for getting knocked out of wack when the front end is bashed or pressed too hard. It only costs shipping to have Canon look at it, and I'd be surprised if the repair was over $150. Could be less than $100.
On the other hand the Sigma 50mm f/1.4 has a great reputation. I've seen lot's of articles that say it's better than the Canon, and with my experience using the Canon 50mm f/1.4 that shouldn't be too hard. The Canon is a decent lens, but nothing special.
