View Full Version : Antarctican's 52 week project

Well, kundalini started it off and MissMia picked it up, so I'm going to join in too. I'm hoping the 'need' to take and post pictures each week will make me get out there and take more pics than I've been doing lately.
This week's offerings are sparse. But I'm sure that will be the pattern: some weeks lots of pics and some weeks not so many.

Nice shots, Antarctican. I've never been to your lovely city--about the only metropolis in Canada I haven't hit--but I need to get there sometime.

Nicely done Jeanney. Love the shot of the CN Tower. I have only been to Sunnyside once, but not with a cam. :o Can we get inside that place?

Heehee, I snapped the CN Tower shot from my car window while stopped at a long traffic light. I just liked how the straight lines and curve of the CN tower were mirrored somewhat by the adjacent buildings.
Sadly, one can't get into Sunnyside Pavilion to shoot as they keep it locked except for when there's a paid event or a paid photo shoot (it's an extremely popular spot for wedding photography, given the big arch on the side of the building that overlooks the lake). I'll post a shot of the whole building as part of this ongoing project, I'm sure.

Well, darn. :( I guess with all the vandalism at other venues, I can see them being pretty protective of it. I will just have to hop the fence. :biglaugh:

Wow, thanks for your comments everyone! All but the last one were taken on a sunny day, so I was trying to play with/learn more about the metering with the differing lighting in the frame.
Yes, Federico, all the shots are in Toronto: two are right outside where I live, and the rest are from the Osgoode Hall/City Hall area on Queen Street in Toronto.
And it was quite the storm. Now I know how Dorothy felt on her way to Oz!

It's on the road that leads to 'Port Burwell', so it's about 2 hours away from Toronto (at, ummm, high speed on the highway  ). ~~~When I was finished with my talk in Aylmer, I just started driving on the back roads to see if I'd come across anything that caught my interest. I was hoping for some Amish carriages and/or Amish farmers, but didn't see any. I took a few pics in Port Burwell too and will be posting some here later.

Thanks NJMAN (and everyone else who has commented on my submissions so far). Re the angle of the bench, there was a busy intersection behind where I was standing. I tried to get a shot from the other side of the bench, but just couldn't adequately block out/blur the road and cars to my liking.
And as for the lady in the pool, that's "Mona". She saw me taking pictures and asked me to take one of her. One of the other pics I took at the pool was of the roof area looking out to the patio, and apartments behind. I posted that one in its own thread but will post here as well:

Oakham pictures
On the day we all arrived in Oakham, we wandered over to Oakham Castle after lunch. Actually, it's the great hall of a Norman castle, the hall dating from c. 1180-90. It is the earliest hall of any English castle surviving so completely. It was a custom that visiting nobility who visited the town had to pay a forfeit in the form of a horseshoe, and the interior of the hall is filled with over 200 ceremonial outsized horseshoes (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Oakham_Castle_Horseshoes.jpg), most bearing the date they were donated. According to Wikipedia the earliest datable one is an outsize example commemorating a visit by King Edward IV in about 1470.

Week 10 (to June 21)
This week culminated in the Toronto Island Dragonboat Festival. My team managed a third place finish in its division, having been unable to maintain the lead we held for most of the 500 meter race. (Our fatigue was due, in part, to the fact a teammate forgot his lifejacket - we had to turn back on our way to the start line, to get it, as paddling without a lifejacket is an 'offence' for which we could have been disqualified. We then had to paddle like crazy to get to the start line on time, and had no rest break at the start as did the rest of the teams in that race. Oh well!)
The dragonboat festival is sponsored by the Toronto Chinese Business Association, and the festivities always include the 'dragon dance'. Here, one of the 'baby' dragons had me giggling as the 'rear end' of it kept peaking out. So I've dubbed this shot "Peaking Dragon".

Week 11 (to June 28)
Nothing special photo-wise. But as someone fairly new to gardening, I just love seeing my plants do well. These are my peonies. They smelled heavenly.

I went to a jazz concert performed by Diane Clemons (wife of Toronto Argonauts Football coach Mike "Pinball" Clemons) and her backup band. She has a beautiful voice and has cut a few CDs. (I know these are grainy, but the club was so dark, all I could figure out to do was put it on ISO1600 and open it wide up. Any hints on how to get better pics in clubs etc would be gratefully received.)

At least the bass player stepped into the light occasionally.

I rather liked the look of the light hitting the sax, but the sax player still being in the shadows

Week 12 (to July 5)
I was struck by the incongruity of the red chair plunked in the middle of someone's garden

And Colin enjoyed the trip to the garden as well (on Canada Day, July 1).

Week 13 (to July 12)
More from the garden. One week there are no flowers on the clematis plant, and the next there's a veritable riot of flowers and the trellis is groaning to support the weight.

A wonky walkway that was giving me vertigo just looking at it

Great shots for a penguin - your flippers really chose the right moments on the shutter button.
Great to see the countryside round your home . . . and as for those earlier reflection shots . . . wow!

I posted above on the earlier page . . . old age getting to me again.
i love the texture in the clematis shots and the grain from the club shot adds to the atmosphere.

Nice shooting Jeanney. Really diggin the flower shots. I was by that bridge today with my cousin who was down in the big schmoke, and it is open now. They added some railings by the looks of it, to keep the boarders off. :biglaugh::biglaugh:

The peonies are beautiful. I love how that red chair is just sitting in the middle of someones garden. Glad to see you updated your project.:D
