My dad (who only 8 months ago was laughing at me for taking pictures of the oddest things) has now become one of the biggest fans of my photos. Out of the blue he decided to give me the cash to buy a Nikon 105mm 2.8 macro lens. Just because. I complained for a nanosecond, then gave in.
Since I was already saving some dollars to buy the 105mm, I decided to throw the savings at a Nikon 50mm 1.4. Fast glass has never killed anybody, I thought.
Once at the store, already in the mood for spending, I also asked the salesperson about the Tamron 28-75mm 2.8 (which sells for about $600 CAD everywhere). Turns out that they had one in stock at a branch out of town, and for some odd reason their price showed as $400 CAD. Hey, the only thing better than fast glass is fast glass on sale. So I ordered it.
Three new lenses, almost overnight, the slowest being 2.8, all of them sharp as tack.
Next up: a better camera. Maybe next year :)

Don't you just love happy endings?! Enjoy that nice glass. And the nice feeling of knowing your father is 100% behind your photography

For some odd reason, I thought you shot Canon gear.
Now that you're getting proper glass, you'll need to give it the correct moniker.... Nikkor. :o:
Congrats dude...... well done.
BTW, you're gonna love the 105 and I want to see the 50mm f/1.4 photos.

Back in June we visited the National Gallery in Ottawa, and I started shooting the stairs at crazy angles. As usual, some people were looking at me funny. My dad stayed away from me until I was done, that's how ashamed he was of his son :) A few days later, lostprophet was nominating the resulting image for POTM.

Thanks, man. True, it's Nikkor, my bad! I'll take the new lenses for a ride this weekend and probably share some images here next week.
Woohoo!

Thanks MM! I've been reading the manual and playing with the lens a bit, and it seems there's going to be a learning curve. I was hoping the VR would minimize the need for a tripod, but apparently that's not the case...

I am getting more and more worried about all the people with macro lenses!
ITs going to be a challenging area!
Great news to hear :)

its an easy mistake to make when people take really good photos - you expect them to be using a really good camera you see ;)

Oh, I don't see myself shooting bugs and butterflies, so don't welcome me to the club just yet ;) Flowers maybe, but the idea is to shoot other stuff (see my sig).
Thanks bobly and Overread!

Now that you have decent glass you can quit hiding and become visible.

I decided to return the Nikkor 105mm and get the 60mm instead (it's also f/2.8). The 105 was too heavy a sucker and was breaking my back when I carried it in my bag along with the rest of my gear. In addition, I hadn't been able to get one single steady shot –I shoot handheld 99.9% of the time and am not planning to change anytime soon. Oh well, to think that I had lusted over the 105 for a year or so...

I don't blame you! I just looked at the shots you posted with the new 60mm - very nice!

Thanks :) I think I made the right decision returning the 105mm. Are you having "portability" issues with it too?

No portability issues here, but I only have 3 lenses I carry with me. I was surprised at how heavy it is.
