Anyone shoot surfers regularly? I spent a few hours last weekend at San Clemente in So Cal. Got some great shots, but a lot of the white-wash is, well... blown out.

Will simple WB/metering take care of this or is there more to it? (I haven't embarked in the WB/metering arena yet, but it is becoming more obvious as I progress so I'm thinking it's about time I start.)

Anyway, a recurring theme with this particular group is a board getting kicked straight up. Almost looks like it's a ritual. (I haven't surfed in over a decade and I don't remember seeing it then.)

One of the few that leashed their boards...

I doubt I'll be able to add pics to this thread, but I'm sure going to enjoy seeing what others post. My faves of the above are the second and the last shots.

Rekd, I don't know how you're metering. If you're overexposing the whitewash, though, that should be apparent in the histogram when you review the shot. You'll need to reduce the exposure by using the exposure-compensation dial or somehow.

Nice shots.

I knew I had a surf pic somewhere ... from Santa Monica beach in California, Nov 2008 ;)

Re blown highlights, you could try to expose for the water, and then lighten the rest afterwards, because you can lighten dark areas (although you'll then have to treat the image for noise), but you can't recover much from totally blown highlights.

I like the 3rd shot best, nice colours, water not blown, and great action pic :)
