View Full Version : The Beat’s First Photo Contest!

Well, from comments several people have made, it looks like there’s enthusiasm for a Photo (of the ….week/bi-week/month?) contest here. Many suggestions have been put forth as to how often it should run, who should judge it etc etc. As I’m one known to seize a bull by the horns (because, well, you never know what surprises the other end of the bull may have for you), I figured I’d just go ahead and pick a mid-point (ie a bi-weekly contest), and see how it goes.

The Proposed Rules:
As it’s a biweekly contest, the nominated photos must be posted on the site during the periods of either the 1st-15th (for the ‘first’ contest each month), or during the 16th-end of the month (for the second contest of the month). Members may nominate up to three photographs per time period, and you can’t nominate your own images. If a photograph has already been nominated, don’t nominate it again as it will already be on the list. And if you post one from outside of the applicable time period, it will be removed. I realize that pictures posted on the 15th and last day of the month won’t have much time to be nominated for their respective time periods, but I don’t think that can be helped in a bi-weekly format.
At the end of each nomination period (ie after the 15th and after the end of each month), a voting poll will be added to the nomination thread, so you can see the nominated images in the same thread as you will be voting. Voting will remain open for 4 days. Each member gets one vote.

Have I left anything out? Is it clear enough?

Although it would be easier to say the contest will start on April 16th for the April 16th-to-30th time period, some wonderful photographs have already been posted on The Beat and it would be a shame for them to be excluded. Soooo, I'm proposing that we all comb the subforums for photographs posted from the start of the forum up until today (April 15th), and nominate up to 3 photographs each, for the first contest. The poll will be started on April 16th, and I'll start it at night, to give people a little more time to nominate. So go go GO and start nominating. Post them in this thread please, giving the name of the photo (if there was one), or the name of the thread, and the name of the photographer, together with the photograph.

Anty thanks for the nomination! Why didn't you nominate that other one though :D. Chiller you stole my nomination!

I'll try my best to nominate but almost everybody except Doenoe, Rene, and I have photo hosting sights that my work blocks so I can't anybody pictures. I don't have internet at home either... Hmmm... I'll have to think through this one.

It's going to be sooooo difficult to narrow it down to one vote, that's for sure! Heck, it was difficult to narrow it down to 3 nominations...I stopped after the first 3 I picked, so as not to drive myself crazy trying to narrow down from all the ones I could have chosen.

Nominations for this inaugural contest are due in 10.5 hours.....

Some outstanding work from all !

Very hard to pick just one to vote for from those on offer -
Chiller - Life on Mars a great shot and a wonderfull display of evening colour in a very cold place - gives an idea of warmth in such a cold scene! (bet it was really cold out there!)

Doenoe - what stands out to me is something rarer in macro shots- this bug looks and feels big in that shot - plus its a very clear and clean looking shot as well!

Rene - Big Train really appeals to me - especailly with the looks of the big shining city in the background where the train is coming from.

Of course those are just 3 of the many fantastic shots here - and even so I have to just pick one! grr this is not easy
In the end its Chiller's - Life on Mars!

Oh and not to forget - Many many thanks for the nomination Rene (sorry I can't do the little ` thing over letters) :)

Voter turnout has been pretty good, given the current number of active members. But maybe we can squeeze out a few more votes before the poll for this first Member's Choice Photo Contest expires in 8 hours.

Hey, I won :)

I indeed had a beer (in the beautiful town of Burghausen at the border with Austria), but I was travelling and hence totally unaware I had won the contest, actually even unaware there was a contest! ;)

My vote would have gone to More Abstract Architecture #2, by Chiller btw.
