What are your best finds? It could be a favorite camera, a fantastic deal, or just a good story.

When I worked at a locally owned camera store & photo lab I happened to mention to a regular customer that I was trying to upgrade my darkroom to 4x5. I just needed to find an enlarger. He gave me an Omega DII that had been sitting in his closet for several decades.

At a community rummage sale I saw a beautiful, pristine Rolleiflex TLR with a load of accessories. I spotted that baby from 200' away. I knew nothing about Rolleiflex, except that it was legendary brand. He wanted $150 for everything: included case, filter set, close-up filters, and more. I picked it up, and just holding it I knew it had to be worth $150 if not more. I asked the guy if he'd looked on Ebay to see what they were selling for. He said he didn't really do the internet. I ran to the ATM, worried briefly that my wife was going to be mad, and bought it all. At home I immediately went to the internet to ID the camera, and check Ebay for value. The accessories alone were worth more than $150. The camera was (is) worth $500+.

When I was still shooting 4x5 I found a Graphmatic film holder (holds 6 sheets and allows rapid reload) for $10 at a garage sale. Ebay said it was worth $90.

Worst deal: I'd been fascinated by a Graphcheck 400 camera I saw on Ebay. It shoots 8 35mm-ish size sequential photos on a sheet of 4x5. I had to have it, but the minimum bid was really high (close to $1000). I watched it for months as no one bid and the price slowly dropped. Eventually I bought it for $200. It's a neat camera, but the image quality is really lousy. Although rare from what I've seen since the actual market value is well under $100.

Hidden gem: I bought a beat up, dirty old folder at an antique mall for $15. It looked pretty rough, but it seemed to have a nicer lens and shutter than I was used to seeing. It was an Ansco Titan 20 6x6. I cleaned it up as best I could, and shot a roll. I was so astounded at the image quality I immediately began searching for a cleaner model. I found one for $75, and it was my favorite walk around camera for years. 6x6 that fit in my back pocket. Over the years I bought several more. They seem to go for $50 to $100 in good shape. It easily matches the image quality I got from $300 Zeiss folders.

I owned one of the rarest camera kits for several months, the Kodak Ektra (http://www.cameraquest.com/ektra.htm). I was traveling through Arizona and visiting Antique shops when I spotted the entire kit (camera body, two backs, four lenses, viewfinders, Instruction Book and original leather case) on display with a price tag of $180. I bought it on the spot, brought it home, cleaned it and advertised it for sale. It was sold immediately for $2,200 and I know it was worth more.

What's neat about this camera is the fact that it was hand-made, each lens was fitted to one body and they all had the same serial number. Sometimes I regret not hanging on to it but I managed to buy a nice Hasselblad system with the profits.

Another gem I found on eBay is a Contax III 'Kriegsmarine' which came right out of a WWII German ship, possibly a U-Boat. These cameras were used to take pictures of the confirmed hits. It's in full functional state and I do take it out once in a while for a shoot.

And a long time ago, while visiting Aspen CO, I found a nice combination in an Antique shop. A Leica IIIc which had a 150mm Schneider Kreuznach in a Compur shutter screwed in (LF lens/shutter). The Leica was in poor condition but the lens was mint. Paid $25 for it and made a lot more back by selling the Leica body for parts. I still have the 150mm lens, fitted for a 4x5.

I was given a Spinshot 35S, except that when I researched it I found out I was in possession of an actual Rick Corrales (the inventor) prototype! I have no idea if that makes it more valuable or not.

Great stories!! I don't have anything nearly as cool, but I can offer this up:

My husband bought a Rollei off of eBay after viewing all the images and chatting with the seller. It was in mint condition, "like new" Rollei advertised as having a Schneider Xenar 3.5/75mm lens. At the time, his only Rollei was an Automat Model K4-B, built around 1955, with a Schneider Xenar lens, so he was interested in just moving up to having a mint condition body with the same lens as his Automat.

So, he watched the bidding and with just a couple of minutes to go at around $150 showing, he decided on a whim to double up his bid just to make sure he'd win it. He did win and with shipping, etc., paid all total $350.00. (He did kind of slink upstairs to tell me that camera he'd been "watching just for the heck of it" was actually coming our way.) ;) But we've all had those eBay moments, right?

When it arrived at the house several days later, he opened up the box and inspected it, and after we admired its pristine condition, he looked at the lens and just started laughing. I asked him what was so funny and he said, "It's a Zeiss Planar lens...this guy just didn't know what he was selling."

I don't know how much of a steal it was, but definitely rates as one of those happy joyous accidents that sometimes go your way.

Still his favorite go-to camera. :)

I bought a full Holga kit, including original film, book, black tape, etc. for £6. Less than a fifth of what it should have cost? Maybe more.

Ok, slightly different to the other replies. ;)
