Well, to those of you who have expressed interest but haven't committed yet, or been debating on whether you can make the trip, the time has come to decide if you're in or not! The Newfoundland Meetup is on for Friday July 9 to Sunday July 18 (or any part thereof). We'll be starting off in St. Johns (July 9-14), then moving on to Gros Morne National Park July 14-18. Please either post in this thread or let me know if you'll be coming.

Here's a list of things to see in St. John's:

-Signal Hill (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Signal_Hill,_Newfoundland_and_Labrador) (a no-brainer here...it's one of the things one does when in St. John's)
-Cape Spear (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cape_Spear) (the most easterly point in North America. Crashing waves, lighthouse, a pretty drive out there, some bunkers from the war. Images here (http://images.google.ca/images?q=cape+spear&oe=utf-8&client=firefox-a&rlz=1R1RNFA_en&um=1&ie=UTF-8&ei=e5dQS7ygO5DmM8WjpZIJ&sa=X&oi=image_result_group&ct=title&resnum=4&ved=0CCIQsAQwAw))
-The Rooms (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Rooms) (Art Gallery/Archives/Museum) - it has a spectacular view of the city below
-Quidi vidi brewery tour ($10 per person). My conference group did the tour when we were there last September: very funny commentary from the guide (assuming you can understand the thick 'Newfie' accent), taste sampling of 7 beer, then pick your favorite and grab a bottle of it while you do the short brewery tour. And it's located in a quaint fishing village with many photo ops.
-harbour tour (ie on a boat)
-a tour to see the puffins (http://www.obriensboattours.com/bird-watching.html) (I really want to see puffins...they had already left at the time of my September visit, so 'come hell or high water' I'm going to see them this time!). I think we have to go to Bay Bulls for this (a town a half hour drive away)
-whale watching tour (http://www.obriensboattours.com/)
-George Street on a weekend night (the party district!)
-and for Chiller....the Haunted Hike Ghost Tour (http://www.hauntedhike.com/)!! ($10/person)
-the Johnson's Geo Centre (http://www.geocentre.ca/) (interesting info on the geological significance of "The Rock" (for those who don't know, that's the nickname for Newfoundland). It also has an exhibit on the Titanic
-a visit to MooMoos ice cream (they have, like, 300 flavours). Apparently very well known, as when the cruise ships hit town a long line forms

Check your savings account, check the airfare, and come join us! :boogie:

I knew from the start that I wouldn't be able to attend...but now that it's almost here, I really wish I could. Oh well. :(

Maybe next time you can all come out here to visit the Rockies.

"Check the airfare" crushed the whole endeavour for us, I'm afraid... And we believed we'd be in for more than a year and three months. Then we did as you suggested: we checked the airfare... and that was it :(

The Rock! Gotta love Newfinlan or more importantly the people. A wonderful lot they are even if you can't understand them. That is until you've had about 6 beers LOL.

Plan on going to the Rock in 2013 or maybe 2012 depending on how things shape up. I want to charter a boat to hit all the abandoned fishing villages along the coast.

Beautiful place, but hellishly expensive to get to. When I lived in New Brunswick it cost me more to go to NFLD than to go back to Calgary. But that was BWJ (Before WestJet). Once your there I'm sure it wouldn't be hard to find someone to crash with to keep the costs down.

Just checked the airfare for September, 1 week. For an extra $150 I can go to Hawaii, ummm..

Hmmm, doesn't exactly look like hot summer weather, does it (66-ish degrees F)? But on the plus side, it's forecast that there will be no rain from the 9th to the 13th

I can't say HOW sorry I am missing the chance to meet up with YOU in particular, Chiller, I had hoped for that chance to come for one and a half years, only to learn that we wouldn't be able to afford the trip. :(

Please: do take many, many photos and make a meet-up thread that is long and vivid with photos and stories, will you do that? Please!

Awww, thanks Daan! (It's probably still strawberry season, so will have to add that to the french toast, at least on the side).

I'm not sure Chiller or Jeff will do the funky dances that you and Sky did, but we'll come up with something to amuse ourselves, I'm sure. And we'll have to make sure the Newfoundland Newbies get 'screeched in' and kiss the cod.
