Well, to those of you who have expressed interest but haven't committed yet, or been debating on whether you can make the trip, the time has come to decide if you're in or not! The Newfoundland Meetup is on for Friday July 9 to Sunday July 18 (or any part thereof). We'll be starting off in St. Johns (July 9-14), then moving on to Gros Morne National Park July 14-18. Please either post in this thread or let me know if you'll be coming.
Here's a list of things to see in St. John's:
-Signal Hill (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Signal_Hill,_Newfoundland_and_Labrador) (a no-brainer here...it's one of the things one does when in St. John's)
-Cape Spear (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cape_Spear) (the most easterly point in North America. Crashing waves, lighthouse, a pretty drive out there, some bunkers from the war. Images here (http://images.google.ca/images?q=cape+spear&oe=utf-8&client=firefox-a&rlz=1R1RNFA_en&um=1&ie=UTF-8&ei=e5dQS7ygO5DmM8WjpZIJ&sa=X&oi=image_result_group&ct=title&resnum=4&ved=0CCIQsAQwAw))
-The Rooms (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Rooms) (Art Gallery/Archives/Museum) - it has a spectacular view of the city below
-Quidi vidi brewery tour ($10 per person). My conference group did the tour when we were there last September: very funny commentary from the guide (assuming you can understand the thick 'Newfie' accent), taste sampling of 7 beer, then pick your favorite and grab a bottle of it while you do the short brewery tour. And it's located in a quaint fishing village with many photo ops.
-harbour tour (ie on a boat)
-a tour to see the puffins (http://www.obriensboattours.com/bird-watching.html) (I really want to see puffins...they had already left at the time of my September visit, so 'come hell or high water' I'm going to see them this time!). I think we have to go to Bay Bulls for this (a town a half hour drive away)
-whale watching tour (http://www.obriensboattours.com/)
-George Street on a weekend night (the party district!)
-and for Chiller....the Haunted Hike Ghost Tour (http://www.hauntedhike.com/)!! ($10/person)
-the Johnson's Geo Centre (http://www.geocentre.ca/) (interesting info on the geological significance of "The Rock" (for those who don't know, that's the nickname for Newfoundland). It also has an exhibit on the Titanic
-a visit to MooMoos ice cream (they have, like, 300 flavours). Apparently very well known, as when the cruise ships hit town a long line forms
Check your savings account, check the airfare, and come join us! :boogie:
