Hey everyone! This year is flying by and it's time to start thinking about a meet up for next year. I'd love to have it here in Arizona. Next spring would be a great time - not too hot in the desert and not too cold in the mountains.

There are so many places we could go. Here are a few links:

Canyon de Chelly (http://www.nps.gov/cach/index.htm)

Antelope Canyon (http://www.navajonationparks.org/htm/antelopecanyon.htm)

The Grand Canyon (http://www.nps.gov/grca/index.htm)

Vulture Mine or other historic mining towns

I really just want to see if anyone would be interested in a meet up in the Southwest and then see about planning destinations.

So, who wants to come to Arizona next spring? :sexywink:

Depends on how home sick I am for the low humidity. I would scratch Antelope canyon off the list. It is nice but being all of about 200 yards long on the upper section and not to accessible for those with any kind of handicap to the lower section, it is something you can do both sections of in a few hours. Except Page area has a lot to offer if you know where to go. Since i will be driving through in about 4 weeks, and stopping for the night!!!!!! maybe we could all get together and talk places. I'm so darn ready for desert landscapes.

Roight, give me a list of local aiports and a rough idea of month and I'll look into the cost of flights.

Then I'll have to think about accommodation etc!

icassell

I think the best bet would be somewhere in the Phoenix-Tucson corridor. The other places are great, but harder to get to for those coming from a distance. There is all sorts of stuff along the corridor that would be interesting for photographers. Phoenix Sky Harbor airport is pretty easy to deal with (and I think there are still direct flights on British Air from Heathrow).

awww but Ian, the freeway going north towards Flagstaff has more for the people who have not seen red rock country and also leads towards the Grand Canyon. Actually having driven many timnes over most of the roads in AZ. A little forgotten direction that holds a lot of photo possibilities lies on the road to Vegas through Wickenburg.

Ferny best airport is in Phoenix itself, called Sky Harbor. If you want a little fun you can fly into Vegas and rent a car and drive the half day to Phoenix.

icassell
05-21-2010, 06:46 PM
Yes, Aggie. I was not ruling that out and the Phoenix-Flag corridor surely offers a lot (sedona, sunset crater, etc.), but the canyon is a 4.5 hour drive from Phoenix and a bit of a hike. Sedona might be more do-able (2.5 hours or so)

MissMia
05-21-2010, 06:59 PM
I was actually hoping to have a meet up that was more than a few days. Everyone could fly into Phoenix and we could photograph in the central part of the state, then head north to the Grand Canyon/Canyon de Chelly/Monument Valley for the classic South West experience. I'll be taking a good chunk of time off and am happy to plan a couple of outings. Lodging shouldn't be too bad and I might have room for a couple people to stay with me while we are in the Phoenix area.

MissMia
05-21-2010, 07:01 PM
BTW - I was thinking of March or April for the meet up. Sedona is only 90 miles from my house, so a quick day trip.

Very tempting! I have a family friend in Arizona (somewhere) so might be able to blag a bed for a night there before meeting with peoples.

Another friend has just done a road-trip in America but I've not caught up with him to see where he went or how much it cost. I do like the idea of driving around there. Even though I drive for a living (did 470 miles last Tuesday!) I really miss it when I stop. Had to go two weeks without it and was getting serious withdrawal symptoms!

And within reason, the longer the "event" the better for me.

Before I got married I worked for a tour company escorting tours. It was based out of So. Utah, but we did the whole of the south west. I know little nooks in the roads and bad jokes to go along with them that most people didn't know are there.

Mia, I have my Navajo family that can get us around some interesting places and also their home base about 20 miles south of Page. It also gets us in better with the locals and allows us free reign to photograph most places. We can talk more in three weeks when I stop to say hi to all Zonies and spend the night in Phoenix. I don't really work, and with a ton of frequently flier miles to use up in the next 18 months, I might as well make a return trip to my favorite no humidity part of the country.

"I don't know the Flagstaff area as well...."

I know it better than Tucson. That's what decades of visiting will do. :)

Walnut Canyon, Sunset Crater, Red Mountain, Wupatki, the Peaks, West Fork...you could spend a decade in that area and not run out of photographic subjects.

What about those coming from Europe flying into Atlanta Ga. and I pick them up? Since Atlanta is a main hub for the cross Atlantic trips it might be a lot cheaper. I can comfortably carry 3 others with me. We could then hit a few places on the way to AZ. It's just a thought.

My daughters took three days to drive to the Atlanta area a few years back, but Aggie will have a more accurate answer.

As an aside, MissMia mentioned March or April. Either's fine with me but in April you can get 100-degree temperatures in Phoenix. March or even February have a higher likelihood of good outdoor weather, although you can still get snow then in the higher country. On balance, I'd say March, whenever it isn't spring break, may be the best choice.

I was thinking of late March or early April. It won't be too cold up north and not too hot here in the valley.

I can tell you shortly, I leave here on Sunday the 13th of June. I'm planning on making it to Phoenix by Wednesday. I probably could push and make it by Tuesday night, but I'll see what I feel like on the road. It is 2700 miles from Cedar City Utah to Orlando as a comparison. I figure it is just over 2000 from Atlanta to Phoenix. A few years ago I made it from San Francisco to Flagstaff in just over 9 hours. I wasn't even breaking the speed limit more than 5 miles an hour over. Just think we could stop in Arkansas and dig for diamonds for a bit. Renagade/Gay lives in Oklahoma on the way as well. Then there is the guy in Albuquerque. Could also taker a different route back this way so those coming from this side of the country or Europe would see more than just AZ.

I'm pretty sure in order to make this trip feasible I'm going to have to fly. From what I've estimated, I'd be spending about three times the money if I were to drive. Another bit that dissuades me is the timing, March is our snowiest time of year and I don't want to chance the highways being shut down in either direction.
It's really a shame though.. the drive would have been gorgeous!

I'm really getting excited for this meet-up though!

Ah. This is the planning thread. Good!
Could it be April, much rather than March? Sabine will be sitting her school finals in March... couldn't possibly leave her all alone then, I think. As Easter is VERY late in the year, the school holidays are only between 16 and 30 April... But we might not need to wait for those to start. Maybe.

And prices looks a lot more affordable (from what I could find now, only checking Lufthansa flights, as we could use up miles on those) than they did for Newfoundland!

No it doesn't fall down, it either is dry rain or goes sideways. IF IT RAINS, BTW we got snow in the mountains the last two nights and currently on Aug. 8th it is currently hovering around 50 degrees F. I think fall is headed this way early. I’m confused you want to meet in Orlando or Fort Lauderdale and fight to either, Las Vegas, Phoenix or Salt Lake. Or meet out west most likely in Las Vegas it the cheapest and then drive off into desert to somewhere unknown with a stranger. Sure why not.

Well actually maybe, guess it depends on whether I want to stay longer on the front or back side of the meet up. I’m not sure about that yet. If I do maybe it can be worked out so that I can pickup or drop you off on my route, or you could go a long too for the ride.

Actually I would drive from Orlando out there. Besides it is you who needs to fear..... I borke the leg of a guy who tried to steal my purse. I broke the hand of a drunk who tried to punch me when I was the Easter rabbit at a ski resort. I decked a would be burgler when I arrived home and he tried to escape. Shall I go on... You needn't fear about your safety, you would be protected by grandma.

I have friends in or near the route going from Fl. following I-10. I also know of some pretty interesting spots along the way. When I was by myself, I didn't stop to take pictures. I just wanted to blast.

One stop would have to be in San Antonio. My old boss from the ski resort lives there now. He has the largest Koi farm in the state if not the US. He also raises exotic peacocks. He has nearly 40 varieties.

As for time, I have nothing I have to be anywhere for. I can accomodate your schedule.

I have a truck with a locking cover on the back. It can hold any and all of our gear.

Heehee, good plan!!!

So, airports. I assumed that Phoenix would be best (closest). But Jeff mentioned that maybe Vegas or Salt Lake would be options (possibly cheaper flights, but then one has to drive). Any comments from the locals on how long the drives would be, and which option they'd recommend?

MissMia

Phoenix is the best one. I'd like it to be our base camp. Las Vegas is another option, but it is a 4-5 hour drive. I'm not sure how far Salt Lake is, but I'm sure it would be 10 hours or more.

I agree with MM. Even with the new bridge bypassing Hoover Dam, the drive here from Vegas is a long one. Salt Lake is quite far (San Diego and LA are closer). Unless you have extra time with a desire to do some photography along the route, I'd suggest flying into Phoenix Sky Harbor (PHX).

From Vegas you have a boring drive. Crazy traffic to get out of Vegas, and you never know if they are going to have a hold up on the Hoover Damn and funnel you through Laughlin. If so be ready for stop and go nightmare traffic.

Salt Lake that time of year is iffy. If they have a storm blow in which can happen anytime through the end of May, you will have horrible driving conditions to get to warmer climes. It is also a good 5 to 6 hours depending on how you drive from SLC to Vegas area. Then you have to contend with crazy Mormon drivers. They know how to operate a vehicle but never learned to drive. Pretty great opportunities for photos, but you have to know where they are.

Phoenix is the best one it is right there why go say Miami airport when you want Orlando? Or Montreal when you want Toronto? Or San Francisco when you want Los Angeles? It is the same thing with going to other airports. The next closest to Phoenix is Tucson. It is a good hour drive maybe 90 minutes from the Phoenix area.

Question I have is where are we going to be based at? I like the hotel Dimitri found for me. It is great for freeway access, and has everything close by. It also seems midway between Dimitri in the south and Christina in the north. They might even give us a group rate?

I'm looking into that! I have some hotel connections, so we'll see what we can do.

Also, we need to figure out where we will go - Grand Canyon, Monument Valley, Canyon de Chelly, Page or.......

Since the dates seem pretty firm, it is probably time for folks to speak up if there are specific things they want to see. The state has gobs to offer in terms of scenery.

I'll throw out some more ideas as I think of them:

Pima Air Museum http://www.pimaair.org/

Sedona pink jeep http://www.pinkjeep.com/jeep-tours/sedona/broken-arrow.shtml

Jerome/Prescott with a drive over Mingus mountain http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mingus_Mountain

[At present, I figure I'll add a few days at the end of a March 18-22/23 meetup and drive somewhere I've never been. Like San Diego or something (5 1/2 hours)]

OK fi you want to do Page I have pull there. Which means all of the rez. My Navajo family lives about 20 miles south of Page on a dirt road. Their place is complete with the old sheep herding set up and a real in use hogan. What you need to remember is that Page is subject to the same freaky can get blizzards that time of year as is Flagstaff. Since my family (Yazzie's) are sort of a large clan I can get info to places the tourists never see. Margie even has horses, and there are some oput on the homestead. But it would require some 4x4's for transport to some of the places. I know cars can make it, but I wouldn't trust what the roads might be like. Nice thing is the laws about photography are suspended if you have a Navajo family taking you around. Their fry bread is to die for.

My rough plan is to fly in Friday March 18th, attend the meetup from the 19th to the 23rd, then hit San Diego from the 24th for a few days. So it would be at the end of the trip that I'd hit SD and the zoo. Sounds like the drive to SD from Phoenix may be about 6 hours, which is fine, but I'll also look into flights, as I may be able to go on airmiles and get it all (Toronto to Phoenix to San Diego to Toronto) as one round trip. I'll let you know if I come across any deals on Phoenix-SD airfares.

EDIT: it looks like flying is the way to go...Expedia has several direct flights on United Airways, one way from Phoenix to San Diego, for $60 Canadian. The gas to drive would be more than that!!

I'd love to go to Lower Antelope Canyon as well, but not sure I'll have the time. Maybe the weekend could be Antelope and Horseshoe bend? Vermillion Cliffs on the AZ-UT border is another place I'd like to see.

Aggie

Horseshoe bend and Antelope (upper) canyon could both be done in a morning. Vermillion Cliffs is about 70 minute drive due west. On the way to Vermillion Cliffs is a place no one has thought of. The ghost town (crumbling) where they shot Gunsmoke. It is awesome complete with gallows and rope. I'm sure I can find the information on who owns it and get permission to visit. The trail head to the Wave area of Paria Caqnyon is also on the way to Vermillion. Personally having lived many many years and been a tour guide in the So. Utah/No. Az. area, Vermillion cliffs are blah compared to other spots. Red Cliffs State Park near St. George is almost as good as Zion National Park. Hardly anyone goes there. Between Kanab and Zion National park you have the Coral Pink Sand Dunes. Taking the old hwy 89 north from Kanab is like a time warp going back at least 50 years if not more with very old towns and people who haven't really changed. The North Rim will be closed in March. But Jacobs Lake area will be open. Depending on the snow levels it has very interesting things around it. One place driving south that you definately need a camera is going through the Virgin River Gorge south of St. George. Very Few [places to stop but it is well worth the effort to find a place. Then there is the state park filled with about 200 acres of large boulders covered in Anasazi Petroglyphs. Or you can go the back rouds south fo Hurricane Utah and seet the dinosaur tracks. Then there is Butch Cassidy's real hideout. It was said he went to Hole in the Wall, but he never did. He had a local hideout near Cedar City Utah. Or there is the Parowan Gap complete with Shamans cave and more petroglyphs. Hell I could keep you all busy with spots for months and never see the same thing twice.

Rough plan is people arrive March 18/19. I don't think we set a firm end date, but I'll be on vacation for 10 days, so I'm happy to be a guide. We have a local outing on Sat 3/19 and maybe an overnight up north and then back to local shooting.

The cool thing is we have 4 local hosts and can break up the group by interests. The Wickenburg area has Vulture Mine and Hassayampa Preserve(wildlife), so we could do both areas or break up the group by interest.

I should have room rates this week for the local stay and overnight.

She told the police I had to have rushed up on her and hit her, because she had never had an accident so she couldn't have caused one. Then she told my insurance agent that there was no accident because there was no damage to her car. Thank God I lived close to where it happened, and Dan came and figured out how to use the camera phone. It's a mess and I'm on drugs not going far from home right now. Since I watched metals markets starting back in about 94, this is the first time I have seen it. If any one wants to risk loife and limb there is a small stash of coins in a big nasty cactus patch in Zion National park. All the waitress, bell hops and any others that got tips, would take the canadian coins they received and toss them into the center of the cactus. I didn't. I just passed them on the same way I got them.

Any way. I'm jealous and have major cabin fever. But the acupuncture round I had on Thursday actually proved it was working. It's just going to take a while to bounce back. The dr. for the insurance company that was trying to prove I might be faking, decided when he ran a nerve test, I had a real problem. He felt the spot in my behind that was now the source of trouble besides my neck. I now have medical proof that I'm a certifiable pain in the ass. Since it is mostly on one side where the ligaments were torn that run over the bones in yhour butt, I guess you could say I'm really just half assed. Enjoy the warmth of Az. We hit 85 here today. and I sat with my feet in the pool. I dread when the humidity comes back. Not a problem in AZ. This time of year will be wonderful for everyone.

This one is killing me to have to miss, I've been hedging my bets but now definitely I'm out. :gah:

It's been several years now since I've been in AZ, and I'm missing it badly!

Next time..... y'all have a blast, now! Already impatient for the pics.

A few of you have asked, and I haven't replied as I was hoping to have a different answer, but no show for me. Alternately, I was hoping to at least make it to Las Vegas if anyone were to show up there and head south, but that ain't happening either. Have fun and good shooting on you all.

So far Jeff and Anty have confirmed. Anyone else from out of town?

I'll PM you with lodging info. ;)

This is getting exciting! I can't wait to meet folks!

Luke AFB has released the tentative performers and displays for the airshow that weekend.

What else is planned for the weekend?

Anty is arriving on Friday night, so nothing too far away on Saturday. Maybe just show them around Phoenix or Luke. We'll see how the wildflowers are coming along. Sunday would be good for Vulture Mine/ Hassayampa.

I'm booked! [And I figure sleep is optional during a meetup, so as long as I'm not expected to be in my best form on Saturday, we can go farther afield if that's the group's wish]. I'm looking forward to meeting the Zonies. And if the wildflowers are out, I'd love to see that!

Of course you have to be in your best form. :)

This will not be a very good wildflower year. The winter rains were erratic and sparse. There will be some but there won't be the carpets of flowers you've seen in photos.

I'm fairly easy with regard to destinations. If we want to keep it modest on Saturday, there are places not far from MissMia that I like (Seven Springs, Bartlett Lake, Spur Cross, etc.).

Woohoo! I'm ready! ;)

Saturday might be kind of interesting. That is a full moon and it is going to be the largest full moon in the past 18 years! If weather permits, I thought we'd go up to Sedona in the afternoon and catch the moon rising over the red rocks. We could make a day of it and venture through some of the towns, like Jerome, on the way up.

Sunday, I'd hoped to go out to Wickenburg and visit the Vulture Mine and Hassayampa River/wildlife area.

Monday would be good to go to the Desert Botanical Gardens! ;)

Does that sound good to everyone?

Those all sound good. I'm working Monday, so that's out for me, but it should be fun. One of those days, I still want to go to the airshow. Maybe I'll do that Sunday when you folks go to Wickenburg, because the moon over Sedona sounds cool. Then again, so does Vulture Mine ! Damn, decisions, decisions, decisions ...

MissMia

Ian - Go to the airshow on Saturday and meet us in Sedona. Moonrise is around 8pm. You've never been to Vulture and the birding at Hassayampa is said to be great.

icassell

That sounds good to me! I think the airshow goes to 4pm (usually finishes with the Thunderbirds) so I can leave straight from there and make Sedona in plenty of time for moonrise. .

It's been unseasonably warm lately but it looks as if it will cool down for our visitors. Mostly 50s-70s F and partly cloudy, which is good for taking photos. Should be nice.

PS: I'm talking about Phoenix. Sedona and anywhere else that's at a higher elevation could be chilly, so bring something warm.

Woohoo! Jeff arrives later today and I pick up Anty at the airport tonight! They are in for a wild adventure tomorrow - Jerome & Sedona. Should we do a vortex tour or a jeep tour? LOL

Terri
03-19-2011, 08:50 PM
I've only driven through Sedona once and I would have to opt for the vortex tour if I were there.

Can't wait to see some pictures coming back from this meetup. Hope you all are having a blast! :boogie:

A very pleasant outing today, despite the overcast skies and bad light. Jeanne and Jeff are great.

Here's one of our visitors at work, oblivious to the approach of the deadly desert chainsnake.

It's not the big ones you have to worry about. It's the little white ones that can really hurt you more than just the sting. Wait until someone gets bit by a kissing bug. I think it is that time of year for them.

icassell
03-21-2011, 02:25 PM
True. This is a bark scorpion. It is the most venomous of all of the U.S. scorpions and the only ones you really have to worry about. They're one of the smaller and more innocuous ones.
