Here are a couple of shots I did this evening as a bit of a practice shoot. Angie is married to one of the guys I work with and has a part-time photography business herself, so she know how hard it is to get a willing 'model' to practice on. See what you think anyway...

I like the first one. Its bright, shows her eyes nicely and make them a prominent part of the image. The composition is ok, standard portrait shot. A bit too straight on for my tastes, but it works. While the lighting is ok, the DOF gives it an interesting feel.

The second image is a bit dark in the eye area and actually a bit dark overall. I figure you were in the shade? The tad bit of dark gives the image a cold feeling. Sharpness is definately there.
I'm not a fan of the composition though. Unless you were going for the "I'm totally bored, are you dont yet?" look, I would of maybe had her a bit more lively or at least smiling. Again, its a bit too straight on, I prefer shooting from somewhat higher up, makes the model look up and open her eyes a bit more.

The art of directing a model is somewhat lost to me at the moment, but then I rarely get the opportunity to try this sort of thing - this might even have been my first attempt in that sense. Good points you make though.

I am so at a loss when directing a model, its not funny. I really want to try and practice more.

I've done some work with actual models and its way easier and they usually have their own look and styles they move with. Someone who doesnt normally model is really hard to direct, specially when you are new.

Practice makes perfect though :)

I can well imagine an experienced model can make a world of difference, but I don't think there will be a Riyadh branch of Model Mayhem any time soon :big grin:

I've still not heard what Angie thinks of them, though she has the link - I'm curious.

I know nothing whatsoever about taking such pictures but I like the first one. She has an interesting face and you captured it well. The pose in the second strikes me as a little unnatural somehow.

I quite like the direct gaze she has in that first shot, the hint of a smile in her lips (and reaching to her eyes), and the close crop.
