hmm did you use a contrast mask or something similar on the first shot? Only there appears to be a bright boarder to the ship.
Interesting lighting in the last few - very overcast and yet brightness is more than I would expect - was it a polarizer plus some ISO boosting for these shots = myself I would probably have tried flash but on the shiny metal surface (And for such a big surface) a single flash would probably not have worked.
I only shoot RAW files, this is an effect from processing in Aperture, using Shadow and Highlight Tonal ranges for the effect I wanted.

I like the effect. Very sharp shots, and if you hadn't said they weren't HDR, I would have thought they were. The clouds in the last few really add some drama. I can't even pick a favourite. Your trip 'Stateside' was definitely productive, photography-wise.

hmm I do know that people use the shadow and highlight tool for the effect, though recently I have rather taken with contrast masks - I just prefer it I think - might be worth googling round it (sorry I did have a link to a decent work through but I appear to have lost it at some point so google is all I could do - might as well let you have the pick of that articles on offer)
ps looks like (on further study) that you either desaturated the clouds or it was really dark and grey! I actualy rather like the effect though would not a bit more contrast in the sky help to define it a bit more - without taking things too far as to dominate the lower areas of key interest
No desaturation, it really was that crap! Dont know much about masks especially now since I use Aperture, I have no hope unless I buy a DVD or something... I spent years honing my PS skills, but once you go Mac, you dont go back! LOL
