It's been a few months wait, but at last and official answer has been given to the situation regarding the validity of the winning photograph from Wildlife Photographer of the Year
http://www.nhm.ac.uk/visit-us/whats-on/temporary-exhibitions/wpy/statement.jsp

An ealier blog entry regarting the situation as well as a copy of the shot:

further proof that misstranslation or understandings were not present and that the photographer was in full understanding of the situation

Myself I find it a great shame that this has happend and I hope that the situation can now resolve without further backlash. The only thing I can see that would keep this ongoing would be if the photographer chooses to contest the evidence presented - a very hard thing to do now. Its damaged the competitions image certainly, but I hope that with some new rules and a more indepth study and investigation into nominated photographs in the future will help to prevent such occurances.

Amateur Photographer and Andy Rouse have also been casting views on the resulting situation

edit - forgot to stick this in before - some more indepth reading here as well as more evidence and scandel and lots more (including the existance of a second idential shot taken with a non-fullframe camera and submitted to another competition)

That is such a shame. I had seen the original image and was amazed. It never crossed my mind that someone would have faked it.

I agree - though if you take a peek in the link I just added above SteB makes some very good points (and finds some good info) that really does start to bring the photographer and the photo into question

Something new has also come to light - he took some other practice shots of other animals using the very same method;

"Cheaters never prosper", or so the saying goes. We all know that in real life they often do. How humiliating for the photog to be unmasked in front of the world like this. But deservedly so.

Thanks for the links!

The photographer got what he deserved. That being said, the photo is spectacular.
