Well, now that's a topic I don't know, or should I say 'didn't know' much about until today.
My wife is working now as a manager of a Goodwill store and someone dropped (as a donation) an entire collection of old coins. Some go all the way to 1676 (France) and some are quite rare. Such is the case with a mint 1911 21/2 Gold Dollar in mint shape, uncirculated. Found out it can bring something like $10,000 or more! There is a Vatican Papal medal that's also quite valuable. We are doing the research for the prices for these coins and then perhaps put them on sale at the Goodwill Auction site. The entire collection could bring something like $15,000 or more.
I am totally astounded!

Bless the donor's heart! :)

Yeah! I thought the donor, who is anonymous, might have given the coin collection up knowing its value. Such generosity!

Sounds like a load of rubbish to me. I'll be nice though and offer you scrap value for the metal.

:biglaugh: Nice, Pete! :naughty:
I think old coins can be fascinating. Rolliemaniac kept a small collection going when he was a kid, I bet he'd love to see them.
Serious collections can indeed be very valuable. I like to think about the history behind them...and, outside of the "sets" put out meant to go straight to collections, think of the many hands that have touched them. Not to mention the artistry of some of them.
My avatar is from one of Rolleimaniac's old coins...it's a 1945 "Walking Liberty" coin. I shot a series of some of his more interesting (to me) coins and ended up making emulsion lifts from them with the old Polaroid sepia film:

And this is some unidentified old coin from 1909. I don't know where he got it. It always looked like an Emperor (or some such regal person):

I doubt these have quite the value of what you seem to have come across, Mitica, but they were fun to mess with.
Can you take some pictures of them (or would that be frowned on now that their value is known)?

The coins are inside special holders and I can't take them out for pics. I'll see if I can post some pics from the web of these coins.

The 1909 coin is a Liberty Head Dime. There's a pic of one most of the way down the page.

There is the 2 1/2 Gold Dollar from 1911:

Except that the coin I have is in mint, uncirculated condition and is worth around $10,000.

That is one gorgeous gold coin, Mitica. And the one you have is mint....? Wow. No wonder it fetches such a high price. Amazing stuff! Thanks for posting.

Now I know how your getting all those old cameras.
Does the Goodwill auction site sell on ebay or is it local to the store?

I would hope they would sell an item like this through a dealer... like a Lloyd's of London type place for serious collectors.

Wow D! That is amazing! It's great that the coins were turned over to someone who is so honest too. I hope you'll let us know what happens with the auction.

Ha ha... No, neither I nor my wife can buy anything at that store. Rules are rules.
There is one Goodwill Auction site, Google it and you'll find it.

Yeah, for now I'm just gathering info on the rough value of these coins but we'll probably end up asking a more qualified person to sell them. I know there's plenty of dishonest people and appraisers out there and I am aware of their schemes. Value low, buy and sell very high. That's why I might look for someone to 'donate' their appraisals for a good cause.

That's why I might look for someone to 'donate' their appraisals for a good cause. That's the spirit! :D Seems to keep in line with what your anonymous (generous!) donor might have been going for.
This is such a great story. I agree with MissMia: you'll have to keep us updated on how it turns out. It would be very exciting to hear them getting into a major auction house. Some robo-collector out there would love to have them, I'm sure.
