View Full Version : Chiller and Anty have a Mini Meet-up

Since there are no other Toronto members just now, this inaugural TPB meet-up was small. We hit 'Ireland Park' for sunrise, and then wandered around Kensington market as the storeowners opened up their shops. I'll post a few images, with more to come. And hopefully Chiller will share his as well.

BTW, "Ireland Park" is a memorial to the refugees from the Irish Famine who came to Toronto. Some info on the area is here (http://www.irelandparkfoundation.com/index.php), and you may note a familiar name (Carl's!) as the provider of some of the photos there!

Cool shots! I think I've seen some photos of this place posted by Chiller on The Other Side a while ago. I really dig those sculptures, and like how you captured the texture of the one in #2.

Wow - what amazing statues, they are so emotional! Love the texture.

This looks like a fun excursion, and marks the very first TPB meetup, too. Very cool!

Looking forward to seeing some more, as well as Chiller's. Thanks for posting!

What is the story behind these statues? They certainly are interesting!

Woo hoo Jeanney. What a blast eh. It was so nice to get out and see this place at sunrise. I am going to forward some of my images to the park, and hope one might make the book.

What is the story behind these statues? They certainly are interesting!
These statues were created by sculpture Rowan Gillespie for the Ireland Park Foudation as a memorial to the 40000 Irish immigrants that came to Canada in 1847 to escape the famine in Ireland. Many passed on the way over, and those who died on the ships were buried at sea. Some who were sick when they left Ireland, were not allowed on the ships, and were seperated from their families. The trip took 2 months at sea.
This particular set of monuments are called The Arrival. In Ireland where they left the port, the monuments are called The Departure.

So, the day started off leaving my crypt at 6:15, and I flew downtown to the Igloo, to pick up the Penguin Queen. We made it to the park before sunrise.

So, it seems that sunrise is a great time to be there, since the light is so lovely and warming on the stone. Gosh, you two, that's dedication to the cause! :salute:

I like the one where you had to lie down on the grass, Chiller. Looking forward to seeing more from this shoot!

Carl - your shot of The Orphan (second last shot) is soooo lovely and moving! Love it. And it was definitely worth the lying on the cold ground to get that shot of the 'mother' through the legs of one of the other statues. (Do you know the correct name of some of the other statues? I'll have to google it)

I hope you post your shot of the pregnant woman's hands on her belly...I want to see what angle you chose (as it was your idea to zoom in on just that portion).

Terri - the early morning light was gorgeous, that's for sure. And it had been almost a year since Carl and I had gone shooting together, which is absolutely ridiculous given we live in the same city.

Thank you Jeanney,I think there is a list of the statues on the Ireland park site...cant remember. I remember the Orphan from talking to Ken at Ireland park before.
I love your exposure on the pregnant womans hands better. I have two version of it, so I hope the other is nicer. That warm light was so amazing. I wish it could have sat just so , for a little longer. :-) I was surprised at how little I shot at Kensington. :o

Here are two more. I have 22 images from Ireland Park.

Was the first TPB-meet-up at some point in time last week?
Just to think that in all theory (and previous plannings, even!) I could have been there, too :( :( :(

To be there for sunset, though ... erm ... how early do you have to get up at this time of the year?
You definitely were there at the rightest of moments!!! Well done!

The meet-up was yesterday morning. And we were thinking of you, and how it would have been great if you could have made it to Toronto this past week. :(

Sunrise was around 7:15 a.m. Ireland Park is about a 2 minute drive from where I live, so I didn't have to get up terribly early. Carl was coming in from the suburbs, so had to get up earlier.

I found a link (http://www.irelandparkfoundation.com/index.php?p=1_15) that sets out the names of the sculptures:

The Jubilant Man
The Orphan Boy
Woman on Ground
Pregnant Woman
The Apprehensive Man

As you can guess, the sculptures don't usually have flowers on them. Carl and I figure that the flowers were placed there a few days ago, maybe on St. Patrick's Day.

Interesting stuff. Thanks for the link Jeanney. Do you remember the statue that used to be in the BCE place...it was related to this, from what I understand.

Yes, I remember that statue and wondered what became of it and why it wasn't at the park with the others. Maybe they use it on a 'road show' to continue to raise funds. Its positioning (arms reaching up) is very similar to The Jubilant Man, which is a wee bit odd.

I really like that shot you posted with the silhouettes of Apprehensive Man and Jubilant Man right as the sun was rising (3rd shot above). Nice to have the juxtaposition of those two figures.

Is this market downtown? I had a photo workshop in Toronto a few years back & we did street photography in a market that looks similar (from what I can see). It would be funny if it were one & the same! :)

Can't wait to see more!!!

Antarctican

Yes, Jeanette, Kensington Market is downtown. Another 'market' that's well-known in downtown Toronto is the St. Lawrence Market, but it's contained within 2 buildings. So if it was a market 'area' you went to, chances are it was Kensington Market (or part of Chinatown that's virtually adjacent to it)!

No, I didn't get a picture when it was open. I was lingering outside, hoping to get a shot of all the sunglasses on the table, but that's when the owner came out with the air hose and we were afraid of where she was planning to put it (given the bad experiences some of us have had with store owners in that area)....

Cool shots. Those Ireland Park images, we have similar statues here in Dublin beside the River Liffey were Irish people then boarded the 'coffin boats' as they were known to leave the country. They were called this as most people died on their way to the U.S. and Canada. As Bono put it once in a live DVD when he talked about Ireland, he said at a time when over 800,000 Irish people died through the famine and starvation, the British government turned their back on us and let us die. This is for those who dont know because at the time, the British ruled Ireland and we were slaves in our own country till we fought back....

Needless to say, there is similar statues in New York along with a full old Irish Cottage in Battery Park, which looks amazing if you ever get the chance to shoot it.

Thank you for your comments Rene. There was a show on the History channel a few weeks back, called Death or Canada, which was the story of the Irish coming to Canada in 1847. Some of my photos are on the Ireland Park website, and a few were recently picked up for a book. I have been dying to see the other statues from the Departure in Ireland. Maybe if I can ever win a lottery, I will fly over and see them.
If you get a chance to see that show Death or Canada, it is very moving, and it mentions how the Irish were treated, and the failure of the potatoe farming there. Really sad stuff to see.

Rene, thanks so much for the history. My husband's family (the Rooneys & Westcotts) came to Michigan via Canada & NY. It is always good to know your history. I just recently bought him a book about it at a tag sale.
