So I got the bug this weekend to go shoot some pictures of fruit at the grocery store for another website TheFoodieForum (http://www.thefoodieforum.com).
Tell you what, the grocery store business must be very serious. I was in there 10 minutes when the manager stomps up to me with his lackies flanking one on each side "what are you doing?"
Needless to say, anyone thinking about going into a grocery store to take some pictures... well don't.:whip:
Something about competitors taking pictures and them using them as their own or something. The manager seemed overly concerned almost like they may have done the same thing before. Very odd.... Anyway, there you have it. Don't take pictures in grocery stores.

Thought I was going to have the cops called on me the way they came tromping up.

:naughty: You're a very bad girl.
Reminds me of the time I got thrown out of a flea market for snapping shots of mannequins. Something about stealing their set-up ideas and selling them to their "competition"....I learned that day that flea markets are actually dead-serious business.
As apparently are grocery stores. Who cares how they arrange their polished, waxed tomatoes?
try some of local folks who set up in a parking lot, etc.
they are usual very friendly, altho, sometimes wonder what planet one is from.

We have no shortage of what we call "the vegetable men" who can sometimes have really nice displays in the summer months. I can imagine they'd be much more approachable.

I was thrown out of a shopping center once for photographing their light posts. Evidently it is private property and you have to get a permit to photograph their antique looking light post with a clock in it. They should have told me before I photographed one earlier in the year for a friend who had proposed to his wife on a bence under the light post and I took a B & W photo and framed it as a gift. No one said a word. So there! What they don't know won't hurt them.

You git 'em, Gay! So I see that's how you came by your nickname here.....
Way too many people think that whatever they do, is the most important thing in the world. I guess I'd rather them think that, than not caring at all...but come on...'Big Picture' people!
My experience is that hair/beauty people have their own top secret society. I teamed up with another photographer to shoot photos of models for use in hair competitions. That was last summer and I still haven't gotten permission to display any of my photos.

It has to do with the competition...if their hair styles get 'out' before the competition...apparently the world comes to an end.

Yeah... it's not like there's some huge secret to making a tomato. You just plant a tomato plant, right??
I've been wanting to shoot at my local farmers' market, and I finally think I know how to do this without much of a problem. I use Corel PaintShopPro and with the last release, they sent out free t-shirts. On the back, in big block letters it says "OFFICIAL PHOTOGRAPHER". hehehe :goodvibes: I'm wearing that when I go. hahaha!!!
Make yourself a t-shirt and an official-looking badge to hang on one of those things that go around your neck (looks like a shoelace with a clip attached). "Official Photographer". Yep... I think it just might work!

Someone once gave the advice to wear a funny hat when out photographing in public...people are less likely to bother you when you are wearing a funny hat.

but how about the lens hood on backwards :)
That's to block the reflected light coming off that white lens, heatin' the atmosphere, and contributing to the green house effect on the planet.
Buncha hosers, not knowing that, eh?

 Love the hat. Like the idea. I think I'll try an Abe Lincoln. :)
Pet stores are serious stuff too... competitors have been known to roam from store to store and drop real copper pennies into the tanks. All the corals croak in no time. Poof.

The Galeries Lafayette in Paris are worse than any grocery store, believe me ;) Once you start taking images different from tourist shots, with a lens slightly larger, then you are approached by security staff without any humour ...
They are scared of complicated fast English though, that is how I escaped, by talking and talking and him not understanding much ;)

hehe you rebel :P
one early morning, (about 6 am) i decided to go down to the local Whaffle house for some breakfast. I was the only one there besides the staff and they were busy cleaning to get ready for the next shiff.
I was just sitting there watching the cook scrub down the grill and after she finished i sat there looking at this wonderful shining surface thinking, what a great image.
Anyway recently i decided to go back, have a bit of breakfast and take this photo and thought perhaps i would take the photo of the cook and bring her back a copy.
When i arrived it was a whole different staff and a lot of them, (must have been the weekend crew). Anyway, i got a whaffle and waited until people weren't blocking my view. They were busy cleaning again and finally i thought i had the right opportunity so i picked up my camera and had fired off a shot when this little woman said to me, i don't think you can take a picture in here. I said why not, and she said No flash is allow, and i said, not too worry i am not using flash and fired off a few more shots. Now you must think, no point and shot here, big heavy digital camera with large lens. she said oh. and that was the end of the "problem".
i would really like to go back in hopes of finding the orginal staff as they were fun, and in fact it has crossed my mind more than once it would be fun to do a project about whaffle house.

I think its funny how people are so intimidated by the big professional cameras. The little ones are just as dangerous.... They all do the same thing, capture a frame of time. But if you walk in with a point and shoot people don't care, show up with something that has a real lens and OMG!
true, and then a large lens hood just adds more to the vision.
i probably would have taken my "new " olympus pen, but it hasn't arrived, and a coolpix just want do the trick for my standards.

I have the perfect T-shirt to shoot in. Jeanette and I found it in Walmart of all places when we were on the Texas Churches workshop. (why we were in Walmart is another great story) but it has a large camera on the front and on the back it says "I'm famous in Europe" I suppose when I go to Italy I'll have to get one made that says "I'm famous in the USA"

Maybe make up an ID tag and laminate it in plastic -- something like "Official Photographer" -- and wear it around your neck with your t-shirt.
