Print Crit forum
This is a forum for the constructive criticism of images.
Here criticism will look at how successful (or not) an image is in realising the original intentions of the photographer and provide suggestions for possible improvements in future work.
It will not comment on exposure and contrast - except in rare cases.
If you are seriously interested in Photography then I strongly advise you to invest in a decent monitor and a proper calibration tool like a Spyder from Datacolor. At least that way you will know that what I see on screen is pretty much what you see.
How this Forum works
You should only consider asking for a crit if you have a specific problem you want help with. It is not a general gallery in which to dump images and have your ego stroked. So if you want this or you just want a general crit then post in the regular galleries.
In order to qualify for consideration your post must comply with the rules set out below.
Your post will not show up however until I approve it.
I will select the images I decide to crit from those that comply with the rules.
Submission is no guarantee of receiving a crit.
If nothing happens once you have made a submission then it will almost certainly mean that you have failed to follow the rules. In this case go back, read the rules carefully and try again.
If you want clarification of the rules or you want to discuss things then start a thread.
Requirements or Rules.
The following must be submitted along with a link to the image if you want me to give serious thought to giving a crit:
1) No multiple images, portfolios or web pages.
2) Images must be of a reasonable size – not too big nor too small (my screen is 1680x1050 pixels so bear that in mind).
3) You must include an explanation of what you were trying to do. Why did you take the picture? What mood or effect were you after? What were you hoping to achieve? Things like that.
4) You must include an explanation as to why you think you didn’t get what you wanted or what you are having a problem with or why you are submitting the image for a crit.
5) Aperture, shutter speed and focal length of lens (these are optional).
I DO NOT want to know the make of the camera, the location, the name of the model or anything else. These are not relevant.
Of the above, 3 and 4 are the most important and must be included.
Why? If you don’t know what you were trying to do or why you took the picture then you don’t know if it has failed so it’s pointless asking for a crit. That’s like a blind man asking someone what colour socks he’s wearing.
It may seem like a lot of trouble to put yourself to but if you want a crit from me then you are expecting me to put in time, effort and experience in order to help you. I don’t think it too much to expect the same level of effort from you in return – and a little information. After all, it’s your pictures we are trying to improve here and I’m not being paid to do this.
And I will take my own time about things (although I might be open to bribery) so please do not pester me with PMs once you have made a request. Patience is a virtue.
A brief biog of me:
A DipAD in Photography from Bournemouth & Poole College of Art.
A Postgraduate in Education from Loughborough University.
Over twelve years as a professional photographer working in Advertising and Editorial.
Over fifteen years lecturing in Photography, eventually becoming a Head of Faculty.
My photographic work has been published worldwide, I have been photographic adviser to several London museums and at least two Art festivals and I have gotten drunk with a number of quite famous photographers.
I'm also supposed to be working on a PhD in Photography.
I've done quite a lot of other things too boring to mention but they were fun at the time. Except for meeting Aleksandra Mietus and buying her a meal. That was fun and she is never boring!
