I finally got around to preparing the bromoil matrix from this digital negative. I knew it would take a lot of work since it's so soft, but I just had to try it.

I brush-inked this in black, let dry overnight, resoaked the print and added a couple different colored inks. I let it dry for several days and then came back one more time to add some pastels for some additional depth.

This is really beautiful. I've never heard of this technique and it sounds like fun to do. Can you post the original so we can compare?

The sadness of the expression is brought out by this technique - almost a modern "old Master" to be seen in a dark corridor of a grand house.

Here is the "original":

The whole thing is documented step by step under Special Projects (http://www.thephotobeat.com/forum/showthread.php?t=1247). My mom wanted a hand colored print made from this...I was drawn to it to try to get a bromoil from it. :) Bromoil IS a fun process, the print preparation is everything. Once you get a good matrix made, inking can be a blast.

Thank you for saying this! It was her expression, even in that tiny original, that kept pulling at me to try the bromoil to really do her justice.

I appreciate the kind words, all!

Wow, Terri ... this sounds like alot of work and I don't have that kind of patience anymore, but your results are great!

Wow, Terri ... this sounds like alot of work and I don't have that kind of patience anymore, but your results are great!Well, I'd never done digital negatives before, so that was hurdle #1 for me. Bromoils, I've been doing for a couple years now so that was less challenging (aside from the fact this particular digital neg was not ideal for the process). ;)

This was a labor of love from start to finish; this is a picture of my late grandmother.

Thanks again! :)
