Prairie dogs are burrowing rodents (not actually dogs) native to the grasslands of North America. There are five different species of prairie dogs: black-tailed, white-tailed, Gunnison, Utah, and Mexican prairie dogs. They are a type of ground squirrel. On average, these stout-bodied rodents will grow to be between 30–40 centimetres (12–16 in) long, including the short tail and weigh between 0.5–1.5 kilograms (1–3 lb)

We must have the fat prairie puppies here. Ours can get up to 15 pounds. Big hazard if you are on horse back. Great shot

Natural selection has worked wonders for it to blend so well into its surroundings, but sure is tough on photographers who'd like their subjects to stand out a bit!

I had a shot this past year of a coyote, that blended so well into its surroundings that I had to do partial selective colour processing to get it to show up!

Your focus on this guy is outstanding. The clarity of his head and paws is phenomenal.
