I'm not sure if this is the only way of manufacturing lenses. The ones on this video are, you could say, handmade. I honestly thought there was much more automation to the process. Live and learn –and get a hint of why lenses are so expensive sometimes.

Fascinating. 9 minutes long but I enjoyed every minute. I like watching this kind of specialized, hand-crafted work. I'm with you, I would never have guessed there was so much "hands-on" attention. Loved watched the engraving, too.
Very cool. Thanks so much for posting!

very interesting - 6 weeks for a single lens though - rather brings things into perspective! and I bet more complex ones would take even longer!
Also interesting to see how much cleaning goes on - clearly no fear that the cleaning will rub off the coatings on the lens unless they are using some specialist cleaning fluid
Dang...still can't watch videos at work.
I remember a video from Canon that showed the steps involved in making a 500mm F4 L lens...it was pretty cool.

PS Hope the little guy is on the mend!
Thanks Terri, he's getting better but sometimes he still sounds like he is trying to start a chain saw.
