My family and friends really like this photo, but I'm :hmm:about it! What do you think?

Thanks for looking!

So let's get to the meat....never mind what we think, what is making YOU go :hmm:.....? That's what I want to know.

I think it is the wave in the foreground. I should have tried a faster shutter for more definition.

Or that it looks more like a painting than a photograph. That's not a bad thing, but it doesn't work for me in this one.

It does have a painterly look because the softness and the coloring. I was looking at it wondering if you'd done any Photoshopping-type enhancements, especially in the waves with the purple flows.

I'm somewhat on the fence about this one, too - but I can certainly understand what others are loving about it.

And hey, I WORK on some of my images to get that "painterly" effect, so I don't see that, in itself, as a bad thing at all. :)

As far as photoshopping, I did a slight curve adjustment and cloned out two surfers in the background. Someone suggested that I dodge the waves to brighten them, but I haven't tried that yet.

Yeah.... it's not really doing much for me. It's all horizontal lines. Maybe that's it. I dunno.

I bet it would look good really big.

You know, Pete made an interesting observation about the horizontal lines. You mentioned you had cloned out 2 surfers in the background....were they so intrusive as to ruin the image for you, or do you think they might actually help to add visual interest and break up the lines with their presence?

Just a thought.

I agree. Thanks for the feedback Pete!

Unfortunately they looked more like sensor dust than surfers! :( I think it's just a pretty photo and not something I'll print.

I actually like the waves in the front! I'm quite smitten with them! I'm having a bit of a 'thing' with the wispy orange cloud in the right side of the sky...it's the only vertical element in an otherwise horizontal shot...but cropping it out would also take the cool rock in the foreground. Hm...

Maybe a 5x16 pano crop! :big grin:

Thank you for the feedback! I've been struggling with this one and kicking myself for not experimenting more, but the light was changing so rapidly. I'll be better prepared for the next trip to San Diego.

I love the long shutter. Feels mystical.

The horizontal lines might have been a problem for me if the rocks were not in the foreground. If there was more rock to include I’d like to see that crop...The wave (softness) is what I love about the shot. The exposure if just perfect for this viewer; much longer and the wave would be a blob, but ramping up the shutter speed would have destroyed the mystical feeling that Karissa spoke of.

I love a picture which spurs debate…Often time I feel that’s a hard thing for a color landscape photo to do; that territory seems to be reserved for B&W.

Yeah, this one needs to be enlarged to the max and viewed from a distance before all the votes can be counted.

Cheers,
